Everything you need to deliver the unit “Variation and selection” for GCSE Biology in power point slides with easy navigation. It follows Cambridge syllabus (0610/0970) for 2023-2025 and Cambridge IGCSE endorsed book by Jones and Jones, but it is easily adaptable to others. A Checklist slide is included for students to use for their revision and learning objectives are given as a starter for the subtopics covered. These slides allow me to teach this unit in 3 lessons of 1h each. Everything you need to deliver seven plant practical activities. Easily adaptable and suitable for Year 7, 8 and 9. Some would also be suitable in year 10. The slides for each activity include the apparatus needed, method, results and conclusion. They can also be performed as demonstrations and most of them can be used in distance learning. What happens to plants in the absence of light? – This practical can be done in the lab or sent to do it at home in a distance learning approach as little material is needed. It can also be shown as a demonstration. Leaves under the microscope Roots for food: web exploring activity that can be easily performed in distance learning. Seeds feeling gravity: lab activity although it is simple enough to be performed in distance learning. Transport of water in celery: 2 lab activities included. It could be performed at home with food colouring. Investigating different colours of light in photosynthesis – theoretically. Can be done in distance learning. All the information given for student to work out on their own the apparatus, risks, results and conclusion. Check the slides’ notes for some extra info about the activity. Everything you need to deliver the unit of gene technology for A level Biology (82 slides) It follows Cambridge syllabus (9700) but it is easily adaptable to others. The topic is divided in 5 parts: Genetic engineering: introduction to the topic. Tools for Gene technology: restriction enzymes, DNA ligase, promoters, vectors, markers, electrophoresis and PCR explained. Bioinformatics and the need to deal with the information. Genetic technology and medicine: proteins for medicinal uses and genetic screening. Gene therapy: studying the case of cystic fibrosis Gene technology and agriculture: GMOs crops and animals and social implications. There are two extra power points: Power point with activities for revision using past papers. Power point with revision using videos. I use this resource to teach the basics for paper 5 for 9700 Biology A Level. I teach this over 3 full hour lessons or a bit more. It includes: Lesson 1 (slides 1-10): students learn how to plan an investigation. Lesson 2 (slides 11-24): students learn about independent, dependent and controlled variables, describing the steps in an investigation, assessing risks and start the basic math skills for evaluating data by using statistics to include mean, range, interval… Lesson 3 (slides 25-end): more statistics to include standard deviation, standard error and confidence intervals, error bars, t-test and tips to best evaluate their evidence and state a relevant conclusion. The slides include some activities so that students can practice these skills. I hope you find it useful.

Everything you need to deliver 9 Science practical activities in Year 8. Three Biology practicals, three Chemistry practicals and 3 for Physics. Easily adaptable and suitable for Year 7 and 9. Some would also be suitable in GCSE. The slides for each activity include the apparatus needed, method and results. I have been using most of these activities in KS3 for several courses now and they work very well, they are one hour long approximately. They can also be performed as demonstrations. Proper use of the microscope. Growing bacteria. This is one of my favourite activities because they enjoy it a lot. Virtual experiment on disease transmission. This simply follows a video in the Cambridge Hub where you can find many others that can be used for distance learning or if labs are not available. Temperature and solubility. Investigation on how temperature affects the solubility of salt in water. Investigating water. The students work out the amount of salt in two different water samples. Chromatography of ink Testing insulation. Investigation on which is the best material for insulating walls. Conduction star. Investigation on which metal is the best heat conductor. Cooling wax activity to study the freezing point of wax. Coincides with Exploring Science textbook/scheme of work, but can be used alongside any other SOW. Technician notes and basic risk assessment are included for all practical activities in an excel document and two word docs. All pictures have been sourced from the creative commons website.
