Literacy - Why did the Normans build Square Keep Castles? (Persuasive Formal Letter Writing)

This outstanding literacy lesson has been designed by experienced history teachers at the History Academy to help students understand why the Normans built Square Keep Castles. It forms part of a series of lessons on why the Normans built castles, which can be downloaded and purchased from our TES Shop or from the bundled link below. However, this lesson will run alongside any main stream resources on Norman castles and can be adapted to suit any similar buildings in your local historical environment. The teaching model for this lesson to at first draw upon students prior knowledge about formal letters, persuasive techniques, Motte & Bailey and Square Keep Castles. The activities in the PowerPoint are designed to build upon this knowledge in preparation for students assessing three different letters that I have included in the pack. These letters should be printed off along with the assessment criteria grid that I have included along with various templates and writing frames for writing formal and persuasive letters. It is always a good idea to ask your English department about what techniques they use with your students for this type of writing exercise so that you can achieve the best results with your students. Once your students have assessed the three letters that I have included, o dubious quality, they can then have a go at drafting their own responses and then finishing them off for homework. These can then be assessed using your whole school marking policy for peer assessment and my assessment criteria grid at the start of the next lesson. They can then have ago at redrafting or typing them up and again finishing them off for homework. The whole thing should take two lessons, but that depends upon how much lesson time you have. Once finished these letters make excellent display work as you can see from the photographs that I have included. This outstanding lesson looks at the impact that the Miners’ Strike had women in the period 1984 - 1985. It has especially commissioned by the History Academy as part of a series on to help mark the 40th Anniversary in 2024. We would like to publically thank Martin Shakeshaft for allowing us to use his photograpghs in our resources. This version is aimed at KS4 and KS5 students. The lesson begins by looking at attitudes towards women in before the strike, how they reacted and how it changed their lives both in the short and the long term. It uses interviews and historical sources which have been interlinked with our oral history data base on YouTube. We have thrown the kitchen sink and included a very wide range of differentiated resources. Reformation: Why was there religious conflict in the 16th Century?

This great lesson has been field tested many times over the past 20 years. This version is an upgrade of the original lesson that I posted many years ago on school history. It looks at the causes of the Protestant Reformation and the ideas of Martin Luther. It is designed to suit the full range of abilities that you would find in a main stream secondary school. The PowerPoint includes 5 activities. The first activity is a snowballing starter using all the key words in the lesson. The second activity gets students to annotate / label a medieval painting of purgatory. This will hopefully lead to a class discussion on ideas about Heaven and Hell. The third activity is to update and correct their labelling with purple pen. There then follows a series of slides and links to video clips explaining medieval ideas on relics, indulgences (Pardons) and Martin Luther’s role in challenging them. This is all done simply at a level that main stream students can understand. The fourth activity, gets students to design their own Wittenberg Poster using Martin Luther’s ideas. This can be completed and aged for homework using tea bags or coffee and makes an excellent classroom display. 1000s of my students have completed this task and loved it! The final activity, which might take a second lesson, gets students to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between a Catholic and a Protestant Church. How did Britain's West African Squadron stop the Transatlantic Slave Trade 1807 - 1867?

This outstanding lesson looks at one of Britain’s forgotten periods of history and lexplores how the Royal Navy’s West Africa Squadron heroically suppressed the Transatlantic Slave Trade from 1807 to 1867. Through a wide range of fun and interactive activities, students can learn how 36 Royal Navy ships with 4,000 men and just under half of the countries military budget, successfully stopped and freed over 150,000 human beings who was destined for a life of misery as slaves. During this time, 76,000 British sailors died fighting to stop the slave trade. Many people today are calling for the statues of slave traders to be pulled down and instead replaced with a memorial to those brave, heroic British sailors. This outstanding lesson on why Medieval Castles declined in importance is designed to be fun, interactive and to develop your students’ critical thinking skills. It is aimed at KS3 / KS4 students and looks at the changes in society, the economy, politics, fashion, warfare, the legal system and how they contributed to the decline of castles. It includes a wide range of activities that will appeal to the broad spectrum of ability including a Venn diagram, thinking skills review triangle, heads and tails, word search and an extended writing task. The lesson begins with a selection of starters that look at why castles were built and how they developed before moving onto the different factors that led to their decline. This outstanding lesson looks at the arms race between castle builders and attackers to adapt to the use of gunpowder during the twilight of the Medieval period. The lesson begins with an engaging starter that challenges students to chronologically order changes in castle design or participate in a interactive snowballing activity with key words. Following a brief introduction featuring a source activity, students are equipped with a graphic organiser to effectively summarize the pivotal changes showcased in the subsequent five slides. This is consolidated through by the class feeding into blank copy of the summary sheet. This literacy mat can be printed off back to back in A3 colour and laminated to use with your students in lesson to help them structure their work using the correct sentence starters and connectives. The literacy mat also includes guidance on spelling, punctuation, structuring paragraphs using PEE and PEEL as well as the correct then, their and they’re. This is a must have resource for any humanities teacher. The idea of a ‘mat’ is UK idea where you stick or place a resource like this one on the desks of your students to help them structure their work and avoid common mistakes. This resource was created in partnership with Lesley Anne who also has her own TES shop so please check it out as well. Please note, it might be an idea to run this resource through your own US spell checker to avoid any common errors. E.g. we spell words like colour and neighbours slightly differently to you guys across the pond. I have posted this resource at a low price as I believe that it is a must have - give it and go and enjoy. It will impress your principle. In terms of PEE, I always get me students to structure their paragraphs using either PEE or PEEL which stands for Point - Examples - Explain - Link.
