I am a bilingual teacher with two teaching qualifications, one in the UK and one in Italy. I worked many years in the UK both as a Teaching Assistant first, then many years as Primary School Teacher. I then moved to Italy to an IB International School and now I am on a sabbatical in the USA, where I volunteer as a qualified firefighter and an EMT. I love creating teaching resources and I would like to serve the international community around the world.

Preparing for Formulas From an Early Age

(0)
Word problems and formulas made easy!! Have you ever wondered why children struggle using basic formulas? They may know a formula by heart but then their chosen calculation does not reflect the chosen formula. So how do you teach it? I have created an animated, step-by-step guide that can be a great way to scaffold the use of formulas from their first years in school. For me it is exactly how I wished I had learnt it. As a student I wished I had a step-by-step guide available to me. Since I have introduced it to my students, I have seen a real difference in the way they have internalized the process. When we started using formulas, they knew exactly what to do. The previous effort had paid off. I really believe it is a great propaedeutic tool. This inclusive, propaedeutic resource can be used with your students, but it can also be used for Parents’ Workshops to share how to support the children’s learning or for Professional Development Courses. This resource contains two files, one for the powerpoint presentation and one for the diagrams in pdf. You will have access to: An example of an animated and solved one-step problem for children in the first years of elementary/primary school using the diagram created by S-CoolPal. An example of an animated and solved two-step problem for children in the last years of elementary/primary school using the diagram created by S-CoolPal. An animated step-by-step guide that scaffolds and recaps all the steps a student needs to take to explain their choice of an operation and the further steps to solve the problem. Two diagrams containing one-step and two-steps reasonings to be laminated and used as a model for all problems. 2023 © S-CoolPal Please be respectful of my work. All rights reserved to the author. Multiply and Divide by Multiples of 10 with Place Value Slider

Do your children understand well the concept of multiplication and division by multiples of 10? This presentation is exactly what I wished I had been explained as a primary/elementary school student! It offers a visual and animated representation of what happens to the digits when you multiply or divide by multiples of 10. Each example is clearly scaffolded and provided with an explanation of each step the children need to take to find the answer to the given questions. The resource contains: A powerpoint file that offers the step-by-step rules so that your children can learn to verbalise what happens as they go ahead with their calculations. A pdf file containing a Place Value Grid and a page of 12 questions to be used as assessment or further practice. The Place Value Grid is provided for the children’s clear understanding and support and can be printed out and laminated as a hands-on tool. Ideal also for special needs children and for kinesthetic learners. The visual animation is self explanatory. Children will love it and the mathematical understanding will be remembered. After this whole class activity my students designed and created their own Place Value Slider using card and a laminated, transparent sheet so that they could continue to do their multiplications and divisions by multiples of 10 in a kinesthetic learning style. Photos of the DIY Place Value Sliders in the presentation, too. Simple, effective and ideal activity for IB School but not only. 2023 © S-CoolPal Please be respectful of my work.
