The WAGOLL is based on Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’ and is a letter written from the Colonel to the men working on his estate, persuading them to join the war efforts. It is pitched at the higher end of the Expected Standard, and is ideal for use as a whole class resource. Also included is a word-bank, providing phrases to describe the war, the men at home, the situation, the troops fighting and the enemy. The WAGOLL focuses on formality of language persuasive techinques semi colon lists dashes for emphasis colons and semi colons to join clauses subordination

The WAGOLL is pitched at the Greater Depth level, though could be used whole class as a stimulus to support sentence structure and to develop use of vocabulary and language. The scene takes place in the trenches of World War One, focusing on the protagonists of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. It takes place over a three minute time period, counting down to the order to go over the parapet and into the trenches. Also included is a figurative language word-bank, giving examples of hyperbole, pathetic fallacy, personification, metaphor and simile. Based on Literacy Shed’s ‘Alma’, this Greater Depth suspense narrative WAGOLL is aimed at supporting Year 6 children in reaching the Higher Standard. It is pitched at a GD level, allowing for exposure to varied sentence structures and writing techniques to push their writing on. The narrative is written in the first person, as ‘the boy on the bike’, describing the events leading up to - and including - Alma entering the toy shop and letting the door close, without allowing the boy to escape.
