Big believer in the power of beautiful lesson plans to make learning easier. My resources cover the sciences and geography. My biochemistry degree and tuition work I do mean I create resources for a lot of courses as and when I need a resource-always feel free to comment and request something if you want something else or an adaptation. Aluminium electrolysis worksheet, Edexcel iGCSE 9-1 chemistry

Simple worksheet on two pages covering electrolysis of aluminium for students to fill in. Covers the equations at the cathode, anode, redox, why the process is environmentally damaging and why recycling aluminium is a good thing to do. There’s also links to recommended YouTube videos from Fuse School and the RSC. This plan targets the Edexcel iGCSE 9-1 course. Versions both in colour and black and white. This lesson plan is given away for free in order to encourage recycling! But if you like it please check out my lesson plan on metallic bonding and other lesson plans. I also have versions of these questions for Edexcel GCSE and for AQA. Update: 16/3/24: added clarification that the cathodes are graphite and added a link to a video showing bauxite mining to show the amount of land needed.

Purifying an organic liquid revision notes

(0)
Notes on purifying an organic liquid, including links to RSC YouTube clips of the processes. These notes are oriented towards exam technique and don’t include a complete practical method. The notes are particularly targeted towards the AQA chemistry A-level and required practical but could be used for other courses or as a basis for other lesson plans. 2018 AQA paper 3 question 3 was consulted writing the notes.

What is climate change, how to stop climate change poster and worksheet

(0)
Two posters for education use covering what climate change is, why it’s important, and how people can stop and slow down climate change using vivid photos from around the world. As four answers, I’ve chosen four things that children can realistically do themselves: avoiding using cars, using energy less like heating and air conditioning, recycling and eating less meat and dairy products. Could be useful for biology, geography, chemistry, other sciences and general citizenship lessons. There’s worksheet versions with blank spaces for students to fill in. If your teaching prefers the wording “global warming” rather than “climate change”, I also have teaching materials with this, content is otherwise identical.

cAMP (cyclic AMP) notes, OCR A-level biology

You get a much better response explaining cyclic AMP when you draw it as a hat that makes enzymes happy and working harder when they wear it! One-page revision notes on cAMP for the OCR specification, combining the different places it’s used on the course (adrenaline receptors, ADH in the kidney collecting duct, lac operon of bacteria). Also has links to YouTube videos of some of the processes discussed. I’m thinking of expanding this into a larger resource covering this topic-contact me if that’s something you’d particularly want. It’s offered for free in the meantime.

Tackling trick questions: image reading order and how it applies to passing exams

This free resource shows how people tend to get their eye diverted by an eye-catching big diagram or graph or picture, and not read the text above it. I regularly show this to my students to help them understand that examiners write exams downwards, and that often the very start of the text before a picture or diagram hides vital information that they can easily skip over. It really helps them visualise what’s going on and the importance of looking everywhere for the information to solve questions. They often burst out laughing when they get the joke. This image was based on a popular meme distributed without copyright statement whose original author I have not been able to trace, so I’m making it available for free. A couple of different versions are included in colour and black and white.

Edexcel GCSE ecosystem worksheets, GCSE 9-1 biology

(0)
Two-page link-up-the-boxes worksheet and two-page written worksheet recapping definitions of community, habitat, ecosystem and biotic/abiotic factors, along with case study questions. For the Edexcel 9-1 biology GCSEs. The link-up-the-boxes worksheet is deliberately written to be very easy for students with low knowledge and confidence. The written worksheet covers biotic factors, quadrats, transects and competition, along with a calculation question and practice identifying types of habitat. Versions for colour and black and white printing and a mark scheme are included. Could also be suitable as a quick recap exercise for A-level students. These worksheets are very similar to my set for AQA, if you tutor both courses you don’t really need the other version.

AQA photosynthesis worksheet, GCSE biology 9-1

(0)
Teaching AQA 9-1 GCSE photosynthesis is difficult: with its emphasis on the inverse square law and light intensity data, it’s different to other courses and standard worksheets that haven’t been targeted don’t cover these points. Two-page worksheet with answers targeted at AQA specifically, covering a range of common questions and problems. Questions consulted for research include 8464B1H 2018 Q3 and 2021 Q1 and 84652H 2021 Q7, which would make great follow-ups.

Human disease case study notes and worksheet, Eduqas A-level biology

(0)
This two-page resource lists pathogens, transmission routes, disease effects, treatment methods and other facts for the human diseases on the Eduqas A-level biology course. The large number of disease case studies on the course is something students need a lot of help with. To help students build up a common sense knowledge of the kind of issues surrounding these diseases that could be important in future and likely topics of exam questions, there’s a section on “other things to know” explaining issues like malaria potentially being spread by global warming. That should make this set of notes particularly useful for students aiming high and looking to study medicine, nursing and biosciences degrees in future or getting ready for interviews. It wasn’t possible to fit every topic onto two pages (e.g. flu recombination is skipped) but this worksheet gives a good concise summary of the key ideas of the topic. A blank worksheet version is also included for students to fill in themselves. This worksheet should also be suitable for WJEC A-level biology students, although I don’t teach people for that course currently.

There’s an in-depth mark scheme, diagram of a blast furnace and links to recommended videos.
