This lesson is titled “How were the Pyramids built?” The lesson begins with three anagrams designed to introduce the topic in a Countdown Style Starter Activity. The Key Question is made clear along with aims and lesson objectives are graduated (all will/most will/some will). There are then slides of background information to allow for teacher exposition. The main activity takes the form of a jigsaw classroom approach. Students are given one of five fact files on an alternative theory which explains how the pyramids may have been built (water theory, slave theory, social cohesion theory, and ramp theory. I have also included alien theory for fun if you want to use it but obviously this one isn’t correct!). The students then break away and research their respective area of expertise before rejoining the group. The challenge is for them to then persuade the others in their ‘jigsaw’ that their theory is the correct one. Following this the lesson objectives are revisited, and a piece of written work is set. The lesson concludes with a starfish plenary in which students are asked to vote on which of the five theories they felt was most persuasive. This was a lesson I created whilst teaching at an international school in Cairo, so it means a lot to me to pass it on to other educators. I hope your students enjoy it as much as mine always did. What were the causes of the Spanish Civil War? Jigsaw lesson approach

This lesson is titled “What were the causes of the Spanish Civil War?” The lesson begins with a Blankety Blank Starter Activity to introduce the students to a quotation by H. L. Mencken related to the conflict. The Key Question is then made clear along with aims, and lesson objectives are graduated (all will/most will/some will). There are then slides of background information to allow for teacher exposition. The main activity takes the form of a jigsaw classroom approach. Students are given one of five fact files on an alternative cause of the Spanish Civil War (political instability and polarization, social and economic problems, military uprising and coup attempt, regional differences, and foreign intervention and ideology). The students then break away and research their respective area of expertise using the fact file given (as well as a library book box/internet) before rejoining the group. The challenge is for them to then persuade the others in their ‘jigsaw’ that theirs was the principle cause. Following this the lesson objectives are revisited, and a piece of written work is set in which they collaborate their research to arrive at a fuller answer to the Key Question. The lesson concludes with a starfish plenary in which students are asked to vote on which of the five causes they felt was the most important. I hope your students enjoy it as much as mine always do. This lesson is titled “How was Franz Ferdinand assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914?” The lesson begins with an Odd One Out activity designed to introduce the class to the concept of political assassination. The Key Question is shown along with aims and graduated learning objectives (all will/most will/some will) before slides of background knowledge to enable teacher exposition. The class are then set a heads and tails card sort activity which they cut and glue into their books to tell the chronology of the assassination. They are then placed in groups of six (or less) and given their own character cards. From here the main activity begins. A four scene role play is explained to them and they have to work together to create a role play involving their characters. A summary of the four acts is provided on one single slide for ease of reference. Students revisit the learning objectives as they act out their performances. The lesson concludes with a flower plenary in which they are invited to add eight pieces of newly acquired knowledge to 8 petals. This lesson has been designed with high school students in mind and I hope your students get a much from it as mine always do. Wishing you a terrific day.

This lesson is titled “What were the causes of the French Revolution?” The lesson begins with a Blankety Blank style Starter Activity in which students are invited to fill in the missing word. Students are then placed in groups of three and given a one slide fact file on either social, economic, or political causes. Their jigsaw activity is to research their topic using the cards as well as internet/library to then return to their group as an expert and convince them of the importance of their single factor. After this they are asked to work together to complete a piece of writing to answer the Key Question. The lesson objectives are revisited, and the lesson concludes with a plenary activity in which students vote on the most convincing reason. This lesson has been designed for high school students. Was William Wallace a hero or a villain?

This lesson is titled “Was William Wallace a hero or a villain? Braveheart.” The lesson begins with a Starter Activity in which students are asked to place four historical figures in order of height. This introduces the class to the idea of myth (Wallace was probably not the giant legend states). The Key Question is then stated. Aims and lesson objectives are graduated (all will/most will/some will). There are slides of background information to allow for teacher exposition. Students are then placed in a pair and given one of two character cards (for and against Wallace). They work together to sift through 12 evidence cards to decide if the evidence suggests he was a hero or a villain. A plain version is provided as well as a colour coded one for those who need a little more help. Using this they then attempt the second part of the main activity which is to write a two-sided newspaper report. The lesson objectives are revisited. The lesson concludes with two plenaries. First, they are asked to come to the board and fill up an eight-petalled flower with compelling evidence. They then vote with their feet by standing to the side of the classroom they mostly agree with (i.e. he was a hero, or he was a villain). I hope your students get as much from this lesson as mine do. This lesson is titled “What were the roles of religion in the Middle Ages?” The lesson begins with an Odd One Out Starter Activity which gets students thinking about the Key Question. Lesson aims and graduated objectives (all will/most will/some will) are then introduced. After this there are slides of background information to allow for teacher exposition. The main activity is a Gallery Walk where students get out of their seats and walk around the classroom making notes on the social, economic, spiritual, and political aspects of religious life in the Middle Ages. From here students create mind maps and show them to their peers. The lesson objectives are revisited. The lesson concludes with a trash can plenary in which students are invited to come to the board and place a post it note with knowledge acquired in the correct category. Over 200 revision flash cards based on key people and events from Weimar and Nazi Germany. Simply print, cut out, and fold. These took me forever to create but they are my number one ‘go to’ revision tool for my exam classes and have had wholly positive feedback. Also works extremely well as an end of unit activity whereby students can use the cards to create a visual mind-map / layout of the course. Give them to your students before exams to ensure their subject knowledge is spot on!

In this lesson students read through precise and carefully selected knowledge in the background notes before attempting a colour-coordinated hexagonal card sort. This helps them break reasons for the Key Question down into factors and also offers them the opportunity to make and explain links between the evidence they choose. My students really enjoy this lesson and I hope yours get just as much out of it as mine do.

Students complete a maths challenge in the starter PPT to introduce them to some of the financial difficulties Germany was facing. After this the class work through a set of exceptionally detailed notes before completing a funneling activity designed to help them discriminate between evidence to form a judgement to help them answer the Key Question. My students love this lesson. They begin with an odd one out activity designed to get them thinking about Stalin as the ‘man of steel’ before working their way through detailed notes. They then proceed to take part in a tale of the tape activity where they identify Stalin’s strengths and Trotsky’s mistakes/weaknesses. Following this students complete a piece of structured piece of writing before completing a plenary exercise in which they create a pentagonal plan of reasons which address the Key Question. I hope your students enjoy this lesson as much as mine do.

This is one of my most important lessons because not only is the content very precise but it refines student’s ability to consider significance as an historical concept. The lesson begins with a starter activity which invites students to consider the basest aspects of Nazism and then leads into a detailed set of notes. The class then complete a ‘clever cross’ activity where they measure who gained the most and in which they complete a numerical exercise. The lesson concludes with a powerful plenary in which students are introduced to Anthony Partington’s criteria for measuring historical significance and this is linked directly back to the Key Question. I hope your students gain as much from this skills and content based lesson as mine do.

In this lesson students begin to explore the concept of totalitarianism by a class discussion of photographs of a much-loved Hitler in the starter activity. This the leads to students accessing a detailed set of notes before beginning a mind map exercise in which the class explore the role of propaganda, economics, crushing of opposition and use of terror. Students conclude this lesson by participating in a Connect 4 style plenary to measure subject knowledge. I hope your students get as much out of this lesson as mine do.

In this lesson students explore how Hitler consolidate power between 1933-34. The class begin with a mix and match starter to test subject knowledge before working their way through the notes. They then complete a playdoh storyboard to consolidate their learning (this can be done as a simply drawn storyboard if the teacher prefers). The lesson finishes with a back to back plenary in which students are awarded points for guessing their partners key words (there are given words they are not allowed to use). In this lesson students explore a high level of content in an engaging and active manner designed to embed subject knowledge in long-term memory.

Great activity for revision. There are two different question cards and the battleships are all named after significant ships (eg Hitler’s personal yacht, the Grille). Students take it in turns to guess a square and if they answer the quesiton correctly they are awarded a hit or miss. Needs to be printed back to back. My students always find Dingbats a really engaging starter and one which sets a nice tone for the lesson. The class then work through a set of detailed notes which are high on precision before consolidating their learning by selecting two reasons for and two reasons against the policy and using this information to complete the newspaper template. In this lesson students explore the Key Question ‘How successful was the League of Nations in the 1930s?’ They begin by acting out cards which they will have covered in the 1920s as a game of charades. The class then work through a set of detailed notes before playing a game of snakes and ladders bingo. It needs to be printed in colour and laminated but these work great with students and as an activity the league’s successes (ladders) and faults (snakes) become very clear. The lesson concludes with an angram plenary to test student comprehension of key terms. I hope your students enjoy this lesson as much as mine do.

In this powerful lesson students begin with a what’s behind the squares activity designed to get them questioning why an Olympic polo player might have been bloodied. They then work through a very detailed set of notes before completing a 48 piece hexagonal card sort which is colour coded into causes, events, and consequences. This activity is designed to ensure students can identify links and causation as well as encouraging them to select the most compelling piece of evidence. This then leads to a piece of extended written work. Students complete this lesson with a source matrix on a famous Vicky Weisz cartoon from the Daily Mirror to draw out their findings.
