Phonics Phase 2 m d g o c k Word puzzles

What’s included? SET 2 x6 sheets (activities and answers) for Phase 2 Set 1 (letters - m d g o c k). Landscape orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This ‘Phase 2’ phonics practise activity set (2) has been designed to be a simple, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate knowledge of the first set of letters/sounds introduced. This activity is ideal for groups to be getting on with independently. Phase 2 (set 1 - s, a, t, p, i, n) in same design is now available in my TES shop if you like this one. How to use it? The adult can pre-cut the x10 rectangular shaped puzzles - pages 1 and 2 (grey dotted lines guide where to cut) to separate them from each other. The adult can also cut the orange dotted lines to separate the segments of each puzzle itself. Picture/word puzzles Each learner needs to match up the segments of each picture/word puzzle to complete the x10 pictures and words - all words on the ‘picture/word’ puzzles are made using only the ‘m d g o c k’ letters/sounds. Once the puzzles are complete learners can use these as a reference to complete the x10 sentences (pages 3-6). Extension/follow-on sentences… There are two versions of the same x10 sentences to complete. A larger format (pages 3 and 4) which can be cut up (perhaps laminated) and written on (if laminated - with a dry wipe/wipe clean pen). The smaller scale version (page 5) has the same x10 sentences but ‘all on one page’ for learners to complete with a pencil, as a ‘worksheet’. Answers are included on page 6 in the same format which learners can use for quick, easy reference. Resource Details… The sentences include high frequency words ‘a’, ‘the’, ‘this’, ‘is’, ‘go’, ‘on’, ’can’. The sentences also include the word ‘spade’ (with an image of a spade directly above this word), ’peas’ (with an image of pod with peas in/outside of it directly above this word) and ’hot’ (with an image of pot with steam coming out of the spout directly above this word). The sentences included are - ‘A pink _ _ _’. (pig) (‘pink’ can be sounded out) ‘This is a hot _ _ _ ‘. (pot) (‘h’ in ‘hot’ may not have been introduced yet) ‘This is a _ _ _ ‘. (dog) ‘The _ _ _ _ can spin‘. (cogs) (‘spin’ can be sounded out) ‘Peas in a _ _ _ ‘. (pod) (‘peas’ may be tricky) ‘This _ _ _ can go on top’. (cap) Question ‘Where do we put a cap?’ could be asked (on top of a head!) ‘A cat sat on the _ _ _ ‘. (mat) (‘cat’ can be sounded out) ‘The spade can _ _ _ ‘. (dig) ‘The _ _ _ can stand’. (man) ‘This is a _ _ _’. What’s included? x2 sheets (x10 picture/CVC word cards) focusing on the ‘e’ sound. Both sheets are portrait orientation, pdf format. Also included are instructions of how to make a ‘Function Machine’ and what is needed to make one. These cards are designed to be used with a Function Machine, however you may have another use in mind… Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? As said, these CVC cards have been designed to be printed double-sided on card to use with the ‘Function Machine’ (~instructions of how to make one of these included) to practise sounding out simple CVC (Phase 2 phonics) words - learners read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below. This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently. How to use it? An adult needs to print these card (double-sided) onto card and and pre-cut the cards into x10 separate rectangle cards. The set of cards can then be placed on a table top, positioned with a ‘Function Machine’ for learners to use on their own or perhaps with adult support (initially). Learners read each word by sounding out the individual phonemes, they then push the card into the top slot of the function machine and find out if they are correct when the picture pops out of the lower slot… Phoneme ‘dots’ have been included under every grapheme so that learners know how many sounds to say as they read (sound out) the words. Resource Details… The words/pictures included use phonemes/graphemes from Phases 2 and 3 but mainly Phase 2. The words included in this set are - peg, bell, hen, red, bed, dress, web, ten, yes, pen (Phase 3 sounds w, y). Sets for ALL vowels (doubled sided or as separate cards to read and match) are also available in my TES shop. Each set is a different colour to avoid cards becoming mixed up. What’s included? This download includes three A4, portrait pdf sheet to practise reading and writing CVC words mostly within Phase 2. Two sounds in this set - ‘j’ and ‘sh’ are in Phase 3. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This activity is interactive and encourages learners to sound out and read simple CVC words and think about what these words mean. Some words of course may have more than one meaning, however for the purpose of this activity I have only provided one illustration for every word. For ‘new’ words learners may need to work by process of elimination to identify the correct word/picture combination to record this (in writing) on the sheet provided. Resource Details The layout includes one ‘CVC wheel’ to make with easy to follow instructions. Once the wheel is assembled once turned different initial letters are revealed to make x9 ‘_ug’ CVC words. ALL words are ‘real’ (not ‘nonsense’) words. Words/pictures included are: bug dug hug jug (j is a phase 3 sound) mug rug slug shrug (sh is a phase 3 sound) tug Differentiation Also included is one sheet in two levels of difficulty. The first sheet only has the initial sound missing (easier), the second sheet has ALL letters missing - for learners to write on the lines provided (more challenging). The level of difficulty is indicated by an icon at the base of each sheet (right side) - green for easier, red for more challenging. There is a clear space for learners to write their name at the base of each sheet (left side). The CVC phonics wheel can be reused time and again. Suggestion I suggest printing and making the phonics wheel out of card which is stronger so more robust than paper and easier to turn. Some words of course may have more than one meaning, however for the purpose of this activity I have only provided one illustration for every word. For ‘new’ words learners may need to work by process of elimination to identify the correct word/picture combination to record this (in writing) on the sheet provided. Resource Details There are x5 (colour coded) sets included here. Each set includes one ‘CVC wheel’ to make with easy to follow instructions. Once the wheel is assembled when turned different initial letters are revealed to make x9 CVC words per wheel. These words correspond with the pictures and words on the sheets included. ALL words are ‘real’ (not ‘nonsense’) words. CVC words include the sounds ‘an’, ‘et’, ‘ip’, ‘og’ and ‘ug’ Differentiation Also included with each set is one sheet in two levels of difficulty. The first sheet only has the initial sound missing (easier), the second sheet has ALL letters missing - for learners to write on the lines provided (more challenging). What’s included? This download includes x4 pdf pages, portrait orientation in colour featuring ten images that all begin with the ‘c’ sound AND x2 sheets featuring the same images providing x10 words to sound out and write (using letters only found in Phases 2 and 3). What’s it for? Page 1 is designed to be used with other letters in the same colour set (orange). The orange set includes the letters m, d, g, o, c, k. Pages 2 and 3 are for practising sounding out and writing words on. Page 4 shows the ‘answers’. How to use it? Page 1. An adult prints the sheet out (ideally onto card) and cuts along the dotted lines, including to separate the ‘c letters’ from the ‘c images’ (instructions are included on the sheet itself). These can then be placed on a table top along with other letters from the ‘orange set’ for learners to match - the image with the matching/correct initial letter sound as a two part mini jigsaw puzzle. The ‘c letters’ only fit the ‘c images’ - the other letters in the orange set only fit with the (correct) respective images. Page 2. Learners are to sound out and write the words for the images featured on the sheet, one image per box. Page 2 is easier to complete as lines show how many sounds are in each word. Page 3. Learners are to sound out and write the words for the images featured on the sheet, one image per box. Page 3 is the more tricky than page 2 as learners only have one ‘line’ to write the words on without an indication of how many sounds are in each word. Page 4 clearly shows the answers - set out in the same format as pages 2 and 3 for learners to use themselves to crosscheck their work independently - encouraging autonomy. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in year one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The tick in each image box on page 1 (top right) indicates that this image is a word which can be sounded out. On pages 2 and 4 the red line or letter indicates that the sound/spelling is tricky - perhaps hard to hear when spoken (depending on how the word is said) or is an irregular spelling (not yet learnt). Learners may need help with these letters/sounds. Red is included in this way to alert learners to this potential difficulty. The layout of every letter/sound in this set is/will be (when complete!) in the same format, making this a predictable and structured activity, ideal to keep learners engaged and independent. Resource layout The font used on page 1 is ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ - size 120, so a large, ‘easy to read’ size. The font is the same type on page 4 - size 40.
