L2 F/S English - Mock - wellness

Based on the Pearson model of Functional English - I have created a L2 reading Mock - as close to the original Pearson versions as I can. There not that many Pearson mocks in circulation (possibly only 3 officially). The texts are based around the benefits of wellness and being outdoors and includes all 15 questions found on the exam. Please keep in mind that the Tes preview can distort the look of the resource and is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps.

L1 / L2 Functional English - Drag Queen

This resource has been designed to be incorporated into sessions or to be used as homework or revision. Based around a news article about a female drag queen, the resource has both reading and writing practice with language and vocab focus. Tes provides a limited preview, so for this reason I have included screen-shots to help give you a better view of the material. The resource is designed to be altered to suit your own cohort or sessions. Hope it helps.

Read and obtain F/S English - L1 / 2 - Sustainability

This resource is a 5 page resource centered around the theme of UK wildlife and sustainability. Students can engage via a quiz and answer / information pages, and then move on to answer questions which are based along the style of questions on the functional skills reading paper. This resource can form a part of a larger lesson on the theme of sustainability or be used as homework or quick revision. You can adapt the resource to accommodate your own cohorts and teaching style. Please keep in mind that the TES preview is limited and can at times distort the look of the resource, and this is not always a true reflection. For this reason, I have included screen-shots of the resource. Hope it helps

Hunger Games - reading practice, L1 and L2

This resource is developed to allow scaffolding and differentiation. I have used a review of The Hunger Games and structured questions, based on the L1 and L2 reading papers. One is a scaffolded and chunked piece of reading, breaking the review at each paragraph followed by questions, the other is a full page of reading with questions levelled slightly higher. Resources like this can help the students in class who’s reading skills need further development and are struggling with the rest of the class, whilst also supporting those progressing well in class and allowing some exam practice. Resources can be adapted to suit your cohort and student needs. Please keep in mind that the TES preview is limited, and so I have added screenshots to give you a fuller look at the resource. Hope it helps

EAL support booklet - Functional English

I find teaching functional skills English , I’m getting more and more students who in fact need ESOL specialist classes. I’m not an ESOL tutor but due to the increasing demand to teach English as a second language and fill ESOL gaps in students knowledge I have developed a number of resources of common problems ESOL student have, which I have complied into a 35 page support booklet which I now give my ESOL learners. The idea is the students use this booklet to support their own self-study and English language development or I use it to set targeted and individual homework. The booklet has explainers and tasks to comeplete and ideas on how to further develop own self-study. I find it quite useful and I hope you do to. You can adapt the booklet to suit your own cohort or levels. Please be aware the the TES preview can distort the look of the resources, and this is not always a true reflection.

I have created a series of writing prompts for learners of L2 functional English in response to limited past papers / mocks. I teach in an areas where learners are offered multiple resits and so need a wide range of practice materials. Tasks range from full 35 min writing tasks to starters where the learner is asked to write only the opening paragraphs. Types of question covers persuasive letter writing, formal and informal writing, report writing, online forums, letters of complaint and articles. Please keep in mind that the TES preview often distorts the look of the materials and is not always a true reflection. I hope it helps.

I support vulnerable students with their Functional English in 1-2-1 hour sessions. The materials I create are designed to be simplified, to support their main learning and be used as revision or guided homework, however feel free to adapt to your own cohort. This session supports the reading paper at L1 and is based around the painting, the raft of Medusa. We start simple and focus and read and obtain questions and work our way up to exam style questions. Hope it helps

I support vulnerable students with their English with weekly 1-2-1 hour long sessions. The sessions I create are designed to create interest in the student and to revise skills taught in their main session. This session starts with developing Haikus to engage the student and get them thinking of different vocabulary and sentence structures, it is also useful for underpinning spelling techniques and proofreading. We work our way up to L1 reading practice with a piece of text about Frida Kahlo. Feel free to adapt for your own needs. Hope it helps

I run 1 hour long support sessions in GCSE English for students who are more vulnerable. I have short and simple sessions to support these students with their learning. This session cover paper 2 question - the compare question and focuses on how to structure an answer (point, quote, infer - you may use a different format). The materials start simply with the analysis of two images and works it way up to two short samples of different era texts. The materials are enough to fill an hour support session, feel free to adapt to suit your own timetable and cohort. Hope it helps

L2 Functional English writing - investigation

I find it useful, when close to the exam period, to take students through an exam answer as if they were the examiner and awarding the marks. This helps to clarify in the students mind the skills and knowledge they need to demonstrate in the exam and to identify any areas of development within their own writing skills. This session is based on that premise. This session has enough resources to fill a 2 hour session. It takes 3 sample answers from the exam board and the class examine each one and uses a simplified mark scheme to award marks. The class is then asked to honestly critique their own skills next to the criteria and develop a revision plan to work on up until their own exam. The session is based around SOLO teaching method which chunks up learning and increases in difficulty. I find this helps to put the writing exam, and students own skill sets into perspective and aids in self study. Hope it helps

Developing writing skills Functional English

This session was designed for a L2 student F/S who’s first language wasn’t English but was strong enough to not be put in a ESOL class. They struggled with writing, using a range of vocabulary and sentence structures. This session was designed to try and broaden their skills in this area and their confidence with writing. The session looks at using synonyms, LY / ING sentence starters, language features and descriptive writing techniques such as using the senses to describe. The tasks all combine together to build up to a short piece of descriptive writing, piecing all elements together, with the session ending with a Functional English styled question. This session was designed for a 1-2-1, but can be adapted to suit your own cohorts. Please be aware that the TES preview only gives a sample of the materials and can at times distort them, and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps

English Functional skills - Hairdressing (sustainability focus)

I teach English to hairdressers in very short sessions (1 hour) and most of the time, the students have a short attention span. I create lessons which often cover 1 topic which I teach over two sessions, this is what you will find in this lesson - two sessions on one Powerpoint. This helps me to use the slides as a refresher if students struggle to remember the previous weeks session. However you can obviously alter the lesson you suit your own timetabled sessions. This session covers both Reading and Writing by looking at sustainability within the hairdressing industry. The sessions comes with a full PowerPoint, worksheets and video. Please be aware that the TES preview can at times distort the look of the resources and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps

English F/S L2 - Hair students - Q13 Edxcel paper

If you have reluctant hair students who need, but don’t want, L2 functional English then this resource may be helpful. I teach very short sessions (1 hour) to disruptive and disengaged student so naturally if you need to adjust the materials to suit your needs / class lengths then you can. This lesson is centered around a clip from America’s Next Top Model - the hairstyle episode where the models get make-overs. I used this to introduce the idea of comparison and a P.E.E answer structure which is needed for Q13 of the Edexcel reading paper. The students compare the reactions of two models and form a P.E.E answer. Again, my classes are only an hour so feel free to further develop. Hope it helps

English F/S - hair/beauty students - low level

If you have hair students like mine, then they hate English and only want to do anything related to hair then these resources may be helpful. I teach very short sessions (1 hour) to very low level and reluctant hair & beauty students who will disrupt any lesson to avoid doing the work. Naturally you can adapt and change the materials to suit your own class needs/lengths. This resource is designed to encourage the students to write and broaden their vocabulary. This includes a Power Point, paired matching task with extension worksheet and a short descriptive writing task all based around describing different hair styles. Hope it helps

English F/S - Hair students - Language Features

If you have hair students like mine, then they really hate English and only want to do anything related to hair then these resources may be helpful. I teach very short sessions (1 hour) to very low level and reluctant hair students who will disrupt any lesson to avoid doing the work. This session is designed to teach the basics of language features and to help the students learn the terminology. For this reason, DAFOREST has been shortened to DRAFTES. (Naturally, you can adapt the resource to cater to your own class needs) The session includes rote teaching the terminology, a paired matching task and a identification task. The majority of the tasks and activities are hair related to help encourage engagement. Please be aware that the TES preview can at times distort the look of the resources and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps.

Functional Skills English for hair and beauty students -L2

This lesson was developed to support reluctant hair and beauty students through L2 functional skills English (excel paper) and is focused at introducing Q13 (compare/contrast question) and Point, evidence, evidence answer structures. To engage these students, the lesson is focused around an episode of Americas Next Top Model - the make over episode. As I have 1 hour classes with incredibly reluctant students who are only interested in doing hair, this lesson is stripped back but can be developed on and is used as an introduction to Q13. The resource comes with a full powerpoint, with a proofreading starter, video and worksheets, breakdown/scaffolding tasks. please be aware that the TES preview can sometimes distort the look of the resource and this is not always a true reflection. I hope it helps.

This resource comes with 2 articles, video, powerpoint and worksheets. The session also underpins dictionary use / vocabulary meaning and inference. It has been designed to fill a 2 hour session and has a writing extension task. Please keep in mind that TES preview can give a altered view of the resource and this is not always a true reflection. This resource is an introduction to comparing two tasks and the P.E.E answer format to Q13 on the L2 reading paper. The theme of the lesson is “Flat Earth” and contains a Powerpoint, video and related worksheets. This is a quick paced session design for classes which are 2 hours, but can be altered to suit your timetable. Hope it helps
