This activity includes 7 mini case studies on disorders of the digestive system (peptic ulcer, GERD, gall stones, gastroenteritis and more). Each case involves a patient who presents with various symptoms and students will determine a diagnosis, symptoms and risk factors, diagnostic tests, and treatment options. Teachers can determine the depth of student response and whether students work independently or with a partner. A case study is a detailed report of the symptoms, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of an individual patient. They are an excellent way for students to research, learn, and practice critical thinking skills. Meet Evelyn Williamson, an 83 year old female with osteoporosis who suffers a fall and ends up with a fractured hip. Students will research osteoporosis, open reduction internal fixation surgery, total hip arthroplasty and other aspects of Evelyn’s diagnosis and treatment. **Evelyn and her case are fiction! Ideal for a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Anatomy and Physiology, or related course and can be used as a classwork assignment. Students can work independently on the case, and then discuss in small group or as a whole class.
