What’s included?
This download includes x6 A4, portrait pdf sheets.

What’s it for?
This investigation has been designed as workbook and is predictable and easy to follow. Learners focus at one 2D shape at a time, investigate its properties and record their findings in a workbook. This information can then be used to answer quick recap questions at the end of the activity.

How to use this resource?
Learners investigate six 2D shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon and hexagon) focusing on one at a time. Learners name each shape and explore whether the sides are curved/straight, how many sides there are, whether the sides are equal in length and if there are corners (vertices) or not, and, if so, how many are there? Answers and recap questions are included to consolidate knowledge. Learners can flick back through their investigation workbook as necessary to reference their own findings.

A set of tangible 2D shapes for learners to hold and investigate while completing this investigation is included (page 6).

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children (to complete with support/as a group), pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.

Resource Details
This workbook helps learners investigate six 2D shapes: a circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, and hexagon.

Investigation Contents

  • Page 1 serves as the cover, with space for a name and a list of materials needed, promoting learner independence. It also includes educational facts about 2D shapes.
  • Pages 2 and 3 contain six sets of questions for each shape. Learners can use the provided illustrations to count sides and vertices, and then fill in the facts about each shape. A separate set of 2D shapes on Page 6 can be used as a hands-on tool for investigation.
  • Page 4 includes the names of the six shapes to be cut out, matched and glued into the workbook.
  • Page 4 and 5 provide a completed answer key for learners to check their work. At the end of Page 5, there are quick-match recap questions.
  • Page 6 is a separate sheet of 2D shapes to be printed on card and laminated for hands-on use during the activity.
