New for AAQ Pearson Applied Science BTEC from Sept 2025 Specification
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This lesson is part 3 of 5 lessons that cover the entire content of learning Aim A.

This lesson focuses on getting students to calibrate a burette and then use this along with their calibrated pipette from the previous week to perform a titration of HCl and Na2CO3 and then a titration of HCl and NaOH to ultimately calculate the concentration of NaOH. The content of this lesson will likely cover more than one lesson due to write-up

Layout of the lesson
•Review of which parts of the scientific reports will be worked on in this lesson and the content expected in these area
•Method and animation on how to calibrate a burette with a results table and questions for students to complete and make notes on that can then be used in their report
•How do titration work in terms of an acid reacting with a base and observing a colour change
•How do sequential titrations work to be able to calculate the concentration of a solution using a primary standard basic solution and a standardised acid.
•What are concordant results and the usefulness of a rough titration
•Method and animation on how to conduct titrations. Students will not have a table this time as they can be expected to make their own
•Guided and carefully explained process of calculating the concentration of Na2CO3, HCl and NaOH
•Evaluation guides to allow students to calculate and analyse the accuracy of their results compared to peers and the expected concentration
•Evaluation guides with prompts to support students in writing and in-depth evaluation. It is wise to encourage students to think about their own experiences during the practical for where issues may have arisen and how these could be resolved in the future

NO PRINTING REQUIREMENTS
