This communicative resource enables students to build their understanding of the various interest groups connected to deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest.

8 different cards have the interest group’s key ideological positions on the issues and how to structure the argument and possible sentence starters to support students.

*The interest groups include: business people, environmentalists, farmers, indigenous tribes, local doctors, logging companies, mining companies, and politicians *

The possible options for development in this debate are:

  1. Clear an area of forest for mining, logging and cattle ranching.
  2. Protect an area of the forest creating a national park for tourism, restaurants and activity centres.
  3. Fence off an area for local people to continue their traditional lifestyle, allowing only small-scale farming and scientists to research new medicines.
