This Analysing Artwork sheet will scaffold student responses towards contextual understanding and demonstrate how they will use what they have learned to inform their work.

It is broken down into four sections

  1. Initial Response
Students are asked to record their initial thoughts and feelings towards an artwork
  2. Contextual Understanding
Students are guided in carrying out research into the artist’s life and work. This helps them to examine the influences which shaped the creation and reading of a work of Art.
  3. **Formal Elements
Students investigate the artwork by examining how the work has been made.
  4. Concluding Response
Students are supported in making an informed personal response and confirm how they will apply their ideas to their own investigation.

This resource is four A4 sheets which can be easily double printed and attached into student handbooks or sketchbooks. It can be broken down into different sections and used flexibly. This resource has been used successfully for different levels and programmes and has received positive feedback from colleauges. GCSE students have told me that they have referred back to it when studying IB Visual Art and even in English assignments.
