This is a complete set of Fine Art role plays to be acted out by your students. There are instructions with each scenario on what they are to do for their role plays. All of the photos of the art under scrutiny are included. These situations, which did occur in real life, include:

  1. Richard Serra’s sculpture “Tilted Arc” and its Removal from Federal Plaza as Public Art (users of land, its public, hated it). 1981-1989

  2. 1934 dispute between artist Diego Rivera and Rockefellers when Rivera snuck in Communist images for fresco he was doing for their New York building.

  3. US Customs tries to tax a Brancusi sculpture coming into US in 1926 because it is not art (modern art coming in).

  4. Manet removes part of his wife from portrait Degas paints of him and his wife. Degas discovers removal and erupts in fury.

  5. Matisse and Picasso swap art works. Picasso and his buddies throw things at Matisse’s work.

  6. Student at Columbia University, lacking any evidence of a rape case against a fellow student, makes an art project out of harassing him for same by carrying mattress (and gets academic credit for it).

  7. Andres Serrano’s “Piss Christ” is destroyed by far right nationalism activists in France.

  8. Marcel DuChamp does nothing other than present a men’s urinal as an entry for an art show. He retitles it “Fountain.” It is exhibited.

  9. Leo Stein invests in a Matisse, thinking later he made a mistake, and stuffs it in his attic. Years later he digs it out and can’t figure out why he thought it was bad art.

  10. Yale student claims to have a self-induced abortion a month using donated sperm. This is her senior art project and there is a storm of outrage when her project becomes known publicly. Turns out the other choice is the project was a self-created witch hunt.
