You can find a number of characteristics or traits of someone who is considered NOT to be a good leader. In this collection, I have drawn from various sources and experiences over time and around the world, ideas from inspectors and their reports, leadership training course tutors and candidates, faculty leaders, headteachers and principals in all their guises, governors, government, councillors, parents, students, current, aspiring, ex and retired teachers, in the public, private, not-for-profit, voluntary and charitable sectors. You can look for these characteristics in yourself, in your faculty, in your school, in your managers, and in your classroom. You can use these resources to: open a discussion and debate about the characteristics of people who are not good leaders; rank the most important characteristics to you; map the characteristics of the leaders around you; self-reflect and identify which, if any, of the characteristics, might be associated with you and that you can dispense with; ask a colleague to assess you on each characteristic; compare your answers with your colleagues; and use the list to help avoid developing such characteristics in your students, as each of your students surely can become a good leader in their life.
