This pack includes an 8-page PowerPoint, and printable worksheet for leanrers to draw directly onto using Charcoal.

The PowerPoint is a visual teaching aid ideal for a one-off tool drawing lesson, or a starting point for this as a theme, alternatively an ideal starting point for a focus on the artist Jim Dine, or a unit on tonal drawing using different media. The tasks are designed for students who have not used Charcoal before and explore basic mark making and creating tonal values.

The PowerPoint will stimulate conversation and opinions, this leads onto useful tips for how to successfully use Charcoal including a list of materials required, then two short warm up tasks to help learners with using this new material before attempting to draw from tools using Charcoal.

This is a warm up task, and the ‘tool drawing’ exercise is left for teachers to add after the warm up dependent on the ability of your learners and equipment available to draw from.
