‘Out of the Bag’ (‘Bag’) - Heaney
Title
the play on the idiom ‘cat out the bag’ alludes to the idea of shame and secrecy, but also the surprise and unexpectedness which is also asserted through monosyllabics and the plosive alliteration. also alludes to other myths such as cabbage patches and from the supermarket. reveals how he believed babies were born like the stork story. moreover, it metaphorically alludes to a magician and the joy that a baby can bring. it can also show in hindsight the adult finding out the truth from where babies come from but longs to adopt his childhood innocence once more. the use of the definite article suggests the collective world we all came from.

Summary and key messages
• How the child’s perspective differs from an adults and how it is not always ‘true’.
• He blends personal memory with his deep knowledge of the classical world of ancient Greece to interrogate myths of origin.
• Ideas sown in childhood are incubated within adulthood; despite his travels to Greece, he will always return to the hallucinatory experiences of Doctor Kerlin, the true birth of poetic inspiration that no tourist destination can compare to.
