Visually stimulating presentation allows students opportunity to explore electrolysis of aqueous solutions and predict products based on preference for discharge of ions. Suitably scaffolded worksheet prompts students to take key notes from presentation. A simple 9V battery in an aqueous solution of magnesium sulfate helps engage students, producing hydrogen and oxygen from common household items (this could be substituted for aqueous sodium chloride to produce hydrogen and chlorine). A follow up worksheet allows students to practice predicting the products of electrolysis and writing half equations for their formation. Full answers for this worksheet are provided.
