This full lesson includes a lesson PowerPoint with student lab activities and tasks included within the document. Answers are also included at each stage for student review. This lesson focusses on four simple experiments and how temperature change determines whether a reaction is exothermic or endothermic. All practical apparatus and chemicals are simple and available to any school science department e.g. hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, magnesium ribbon etc. Each of the four practicals shouldn’t take more than a couple of minutes each.

Included in the lesson:

  • Starter safety task
  • Lesson objectives and lesson keywords
  • Exothermic and endothermic examples
  • Laboratory activity with student answer sheets
  • Lab write up extension
  • Variables discussion
  • Reflective plenary activity

This lesson is ideal for students new to exothermic and endothermic reactions. The lesson introduces new keywords and engages students through four simple labs which demonstrate temperature increase or decrease.
