This lesson uses bar models to make fraction operations genuinely visible for GCSE Foundation students - turning “why does this work?” into something students can actually see, rather than a rule to memorise. Across the 90 minutes, it builds from finding a fraction of an amount, through adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators, converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions, right up to multiplying and dividing fractions with correct mathematical vocabulary.
Each stage is taught with a worked example modelled through the bar itself, so students see the same visual thread running from the simplest fraction-of-an-amount question through to full mixed-number arithmetic. The lesson closes with a Quick Reference summary pulling every method together, then puts it into practice with a Recipe Scaling Challenge — groups scale a recipe up and down using real fraction operations, justifying each step with a bar model.
