French alphabet

Teaching the alphabet is one of the first lessons when we teach French to absolute beginners. (level A1)
However how can we spice it up a little bit? How can we challenge our students a bit while learning the accurate pronunciation of letters?
This resource will help you teach the alphabet in an active way combining group work and dictionary contest.

⭐Here is what you get with this 61-slide PPT:⭐

  • a self-target setting slide
  • a starter where students make a list in pairs of words they might know in French
  • an introduction to the alphabet through a dictionary contest (students look for words in the dictionary in English to find the translation in French). However I suggest this activity only if you have students who know how to use a dictionary, or you can adapt it by giving them just a couple of words in groups.
  • an introduction to every letter with the sound and some pictures illustrating words in French that start with this letter. You also have some explanations about some letters to make it easier for kids to remember them.
  • a slide with all the letters that I use as a RAP song which kids absolutely love.
  • an activity with the language sign and alphabet at the bottom to practise with kinesthetic students
  • 2 listening activities with the letters for students to reinforce the pronunciation
  • 1 video
  • a conversation in pairs where students change some details
  • a review of objectives

If you have a weaker class you may want to use the alphabet sound based on English at the bottom ay, bay, say) of the slide.
