I use this lesson with a mixed ability Beginners Adult Migrant ESL class. It is an introduction to the Past Continuous/Past Progressive Tense in a context that is relevant to adult students with language that they will be able to use in their everyday lives.

It is not for complete beginners as some prior knowledge is required. This lesson assumes some knowledge of the past simple tense and follows on from another resource I have written ‘Introduction to Past Tense’.

It’s easy to use, just ** Print and GO**. I’ve even included answers for some of the activities to make it easier for you to check the answers with the whole class, using Power Point.

The language level of this lesson is higher than some of my other Beginner lessons, so depending on your class you may need to scaffold, go through with the class first or pair able/less able students.

The lesson covers a lot of relevant elementary language:

  • · Reading and understanding simple text about familiar topics.
  • · Past Continuous tense – form and use
  • · Question forms using past continuous tense
  • · Everyday vocabulary
  • · Speaking practice – asking and answering questions
  • · Writing simple sentences
  • · An Introduction to writing complex sentences using because

This lesson contains:

· A text with oral comprehension questions
· A vocabulary activity
· Past continuous/progressive grammar focus
· A grammar activity
· A cloze activity
· 2 pair work speaking and listening activities
· An introduction to because to join 2 sentences
· 2 Writing Activities

This lesson prints to A4 paper and may have some UK/Australian spelling.
