The lesson with a think>pair>share task, where students are asked to consider what a lens is, and what it might be used for. The lesson will then move on to introduce students to two types of lenses, convex lenses and concave lenses. Students will be shown detailed, labelled diagrams of how rays of light pass through a convex lens and concave lens.
Students will then complete an investigation, where they will use a lamp box, and a converging lens to create an image on the screen. The aim of the investigation is for students to investigate how the image changes as the position of the lens is changed. After a short discussion about the results, the PowerPoint explains why the image changes depending on whether the lens is closer or far away from the object.
Next, students will introduced to the idea of a real image vs. a virtual image, this concept will be explored further in the next lesson, but this introduces students to the idea in relation to the results from the previous investigation.
The next part of the lesson is about magnification, students will be shown the equation which will enable them to calculate the magnification produced by a lens if the image height and object height were known. Students will then complete a set of quick questions to assess their understanding of this equation, the answers to this task are included so students can self-assess their work once complete.
The last activity is a comprehension task on using lenses in spectacles, students can read the information and then answer the set of questions provided. The answers to this task are included in the resources.
The plenary task requires students to write a list of key words from the lesson today.
