A complete lesson covering section 4.2.2 a-d of the OCR A level chemistry specification- the hydrolysis of haloalkanes. It covers the reactions with water and hydroxide, the definition and use of the term nucleophile, the reaction mechanism for the reaction with primary haloalkanes, and an explanation of the trend in the rates of hydrolysis.

It also includes a method (with tech details and safety) for testing the rate of reaction. This includes some follow up questions to the practical as well as sample results should it not be possible to complete the practical. The practical can be used towards PAG 7.

The lesson includes a starter, full detailed notes, a variety of independent student tasks and a fully differentiated summary at the end.
