Do your pupils have trouble reading numbers below 1 million? This activity provides opportunities to say large numbers and identify the place value of digits.
This follow me (loop) card game/activity works well as a starter or reflection activity to encourage pupils to verbalize six-digit number, for example “I have 743,209 ; Who has a 9 in the thousands?”
There are 36 cards in total. Use it individually or use pairs to build confidence. As they became more confident, my pupils enjoyed timing how long it takes to complete a round, then trying to beat that time the next lesson. However, the primary purpose is to provide opportunities to read out numbers below 1 million and correctly identify the place value of digits.
Print onto card. Cut up and hand them out.
