ROOTS is a three-year personal development curriculum built around 18 progressive units, with six units studied each year. The curriculum develops the knowledge, skills and values young people need to thrive in school, in their communities and in later life. Each unit builds upon previous learning, enabling students to develop greater confidence, resilience, independence and social responsibility as they progress through the programme.
Knowing Me is the first unit of the ROOTS curriculum and establishes the foundations for all future learning. It provides students with the opportunity to explore who they are, recognise their individual strengths, understand their emotions and develop a positive sense of identity and belonging.
Throughout the unit, students learn about self-awareness, self-esteem and resilience while building positive relationships within their new class community. They explore what makes each person unique, identify trusted adults who can support them, and begin to understand the rights and responsibilities that come with being part of a safe, respectful and inclusive school.
The unit also introduces the ROOTS values of Respect, Oracy, Opportunity, Thinking and Safeguarding, encouraging students to use their voices, listen actively to others and contribute positively to their learning environment. Through discussion, reflection and practical activities, students develop the confidence to express themselves, celebrate diversity and recognise that everyone has value and can make a positive difference.
By the end of the unit, students will have developed a stronger understanding of themselves, their place within their school community and the skills needed to build positive relationships, preparing them for the wider personal development journey that continues throughout the ROOTS curriculum.
