This session will explore scaffolding as a powerful teaching approach that supports pupils in moving from guided learning to independent mastery. Grounded in evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), scaffolding ensures that learning is accessible, structured, and achievable for all pupils, including those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Includes EEF handout.
Participants will:
Develop a clear understanding of what scaffolding is and how it differs from general good teaching.
Explore practical techniques such as modelling, think-alouds, questioning, and the use of visuals.
Work through real-life examples from primary classrooms across literacy, maths, and science.
Apply a step-by-step planning framework to design their own scaffolding strategies.
Reflect on how to gradually reduce support to promote independence and confidence in learners.
By the end of the session, staff will leave with practical strategies they can apply immediately in their classrooms, along with a structured template to help plan scaffolding into their own lessons.
