Spooky Spanish Samaín: Interactive Homework

An interactive, homework-ready KS3 Spanish activity on Samaín, Galicia’s Celtic Halloween: short texts, a matching worksheet and answers. Y7–8, 15–20 min.

Discover Halloween’s Celtic “grandfather”!
Every 31 October, Galicia celebrates Samaín, a festival so old that lots of people call it the origin of Halloween. People carve pumpkins into spooky calacús with a candle inside. This short, spooky resource introduces the festival to Year 7–8 using simple present-tense Spanish.

Three quick tasks on the interactive page:

• Lee y descubre: two short texts with tap-to-translate words and audio, then true/false questions. • Mi calacú: read a description and pick the right pumpkin, then design your own calacú. The Spanish sentence builds itself as you choose: Mi calacú tiene los ojos redondos, la nariz triangular y la boca triste. • Sopa de letras: find six Samaín words in a word search. On phones and tablets, swipe across a word or tap its first and last letter. What's included: • an interactive HTML page that works offline, with audio and self-checking tasks, and saves progress • a one-page worksheet that matches it, with the word search printed for paper use • a teacher page with answers, the word search solution, a cultural note and English translations • an optional student vocab list to print and cut (two per page), for support or revision

Perfect for homework: each task reveals letters of a secret code, NOITE (“night” in Galician). Students write it on their worksheet, so you can see at a glance who finished.

Language covered: es, hay, tiene, face vocabulary (los ojos, la nariz, la boca), adjective agreement (los ojos redondos, la nariz redonda), and festival words (la calabaza, la vela, la noche, el disfraz).

Flexible use: homework, a starter or plenary, a cover lesson, or a Halloween-season activity in class.

Part of the Fiestas misteriosas unit on creepy celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world. Also available: Spooky Spanish Legend: San Andrés de Teixido.

Tip: if your VLE or Google Drive shows code instead of the page, download the HTML file and open it in any browser.
