This fully scaffolded 3–4 lesson sequence prepares students to write the May 2026 TOK Essay Title 6: “To what extent is interpretation a reliable tool in the production of knowledge?” The unit breaks the essay down into accessible steps, guiding students from unpacking key concepts through to applying real-life situations and building evaluative essay arguments.
Students engage with interactive tasks including colour-coding, sorting, and table-based analysis to distinguish knowledge from action, identify strengths and weaknesses of interpretation, and evaluate reliability across the Areas of Knowledge. Carefully chosen real-life situations from History (compulsory for this title) and other AOKs provide concrete examples, while structured bridging slides and discussion questions ensure smooth progression between tasks.
The lessons culminate in students producing their own TOK Essay planning sheet, with claims, counterclaims, real-life examples, and TOK concepts all integrated. Designed with accessibility in mind, the resources include model answers, scaffolding for evaluation, and opportunities for class discussion, making the complex demands of the TOK essay manageable for all learners, including those for whom English is an additional language.
Easily adaptable for different teaching contexts, this sequence provides everything needed to take students from first contact with the essay title to a clear, evidence-based essay plan.
