Non Fiction - Travel Writing KS3 SOW

This is a varied and engaging Non-Fiction unit of work consisting of at least 19 Lessons, with a variety of activities. Throughout the unit, students explore how writers and organisations present places and experiences, while also having opportunities to produce their own transactional and creative writing. The scheme includes regular retrieval activities, analytical questions, language and summary tasks, creative writing and a range of engaging activities designed to keep students involved. **Students explore travel writing through a variety of texts, including:** Adverts from different travel companies and destinations An extract from A Moveable Feast By Ernest Hemingway An extract from The Bazaars of Baghdad by Isabella Bird An article on Staycations A review of Disneyland Paris and Tomb of The Kings (Paphos, Cyprus) Fact files on travel destinations An extract from An Idiot Abroad by Karl Pilkington (the visit to Egypt) A Guardian article on The Great Barrier Reef. Adverts on Studios Tour London - the Harry Potter experience. An article giving advice on becoming a travel writer Brochures for holiday destinations **The unit provides regular opportunities for students to:** Analyse language and presentation Explore the purpose, audience and methods used in non-fiction texts Answer language and summary questions Compare and evaluate different types of travel writing Develop their understanding of how writers and organisations present places and experiences **The unit also includes:** A writing assessment based on writing a letter of complaint Language and summary questions that can be adapted for use as a reading assessment Two alternative creative writing lessons that could also be used as writing assessments A range of creative and transactional writing opportunities throughout the unit A fun numeracy based lesson where students plan a holiday An optional creative lesson in which students write a critical review of Westeros as a travel destination A variety of analytical, discussion and creative activities Repeat questions at the start of each lesson based upon the prior lesson(s) The resources are organised into a clear sequence of lessons and provide a varied approach to teaching non-fiction. The wide range of texts and activities means that students encounter different forms of travel writing while repeatedly developing and revisiting key reading and writing skills.
