I created this resource for my Y12s' first lesson on the topic of TV as part of the AS French Media unit, however it could be used for this topic in any language as the powerpoint headings are all in English.

Pupils work in groups and are given a category (e.g. genres of TV programmes) and have to 'bet' how many words they can come up with in the target language. They then get 2 minutes to write their words down, and if they get the number they said then they get that number of points. If not, they lose the points instead. You can allow them to use dictionaries/vocab sheets or not. The rules are clearly explained within the powerpoint.

It's a great way to break the ice and get a new class working together, to see what key vocab they already know, and to identify anyone with particular difficulties.
