Learning objectives:
• What happens during a volcanic eruption?
• What are the effects of a volcanic eruption?
• That effects can be either primary or secondary.

Lesson intro
In this lesson, we start off with what some of the effects of volcanic eruptions can be and how these effects can be classified as primary or secondary.

Main task
The pupils are then given 26 description of the effects of the volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull in 2010. Their task is to write the newspaper headline that would go with each effect. They also have to state whether it is a primary or a secondary effect.

Challenge task
As an extension task, pupils are given an essay style exam question with suggested ideas of what to include that asks pupils to talk about the primary and secondary effects of volcanic eruptions.

An answer key is included.
