An introductory lesson that I use with year 7 to challenge misconceptions on what is and is not Geography.
The first activity requires newspapers, any type will do. I used this with a wide range of abilities. The lesson promotes discussion and dialogue and it encourages students to think about what is and what is not Geography rather than just define it. The lesson is designed to fit in with my ideal of Geography i.e. critical thinking and thought provoking topics.
My students enjoyed this lesson, most of them thought that Geography was just learning about maps!
