A work refusal flowchart and staff script cards for middle school, high school, and 18 to 21 programs. When a student says no, most of us talk too much, too loud, and too soon. I did too. This set gives every adult in the room the same plan and the same words for each stage of refusal.

What’s inside:

  • What’s Under the No: 10 common reasons students refuse
  • A one-page refusal flowchart, from “before the no” to re-entry
  • 5 stage pages (first no, head down, escalation, recovery, re-entry) with what to do, 30 “say this, not that” swaps, and notes for PE, job sites, and the community
  • A page just for refusing to transition
  • 16 staff script cards to cut and clip to a lanyard
  • A fill-in flow for one student, plus an after-refusal debrief page

Good for:

  • Paras, subs, and new staff
  • Resource rooms, life skills, and transition classes
  • Adapted PE and community job sites
  • Teams getting ready for an FBA or BIP conversation

Refusal is communication. The goal is a calm room, a student who keeps their dignity, and a smaller step back into the work. This resource does not cover restraint or seclusion. Always follow the student’s IEP or BIP and your district policy.
