Activity I used with my high ability year 10 class - trying to encourage them to think about skill development, rather than simple knowledge acquisition. Used an intro to highlight why metacognition and self-assessment are important parts of learning. Students then used a sheet to write down their learning high points and improvement points for these topics. Then looked back through the end of unit test and formative comments in their books - made improvements/corrections to their work and noted these down in steps taken. Sheet glued in for me then to respond to, giving them targets for the next topic, as well as effort and test grading.

Used with a year 12 class over a series of lessons.

Used with a high ability year 10 class. - case study sheets (end of ppt) printed out in sets for each table, to allow students to answer the questions on the ppt.

Lesson used with a high ability year 7 class. Was used over several sessions. Covers: - What are asteroids? - How the moon was formed. - Who would you take with you to a new planet if an asteroid was to hit Earth? (profession cards in ppt, I printed these on card and gave them to each group to rank in order of importance)

Used as part of the AQA transition course with a year 8 class, but could be adapted and used with older or younger learners.

Used with high ability year 12 class to go through the impacts of farming on diversity within an ecosystem - in conjunction with the Oxford A level Biology textbook.

Fun 100 minute session on the heart and blood vessels - could be expanded or reduced. Students to learn about the structure of the heart through a memory recall drawing challenge and a dissection. Video links to support learning. Cryptogram challenge for students to learn about the blood vessels.

Practical lesson designed for my year 7 class. Putting knowledge of forces into action to design a paper aeroplane. Competition for team to create aeroplane which will travel the fastest!

Resource I made to cover a couple of tutorial sessions, as we rejoin after the Christmas break. We discussed the number of famous people who died in 2016, and how they were influential. I went through two examples of inspirational people (this could be adapted) - Carrie Fisher for her work with mental health issues, and George Michael regarding his charity work and LGBT campaigns. Pupils then asked to consider who inspires them and to prepare a presentation on this, to deliver to the class/table to convince them of why their icon is the most inspirational (and the effect they have had on them). Class then votes. Good way to get them to consider what makes someone inspirational. Nice mix of celebrities, characters from novels, campaigners, and family members.

British Science week 2016 This presentation explores the history of science and how it is capable of having both a positive and negative influence. It also looks at some key science talking points from 2015/2016. There is a short quiz, and finally some key questions to consider and hopefully spark an interesting discussion!

Used with a high ability GCSE class. Years 9,10, 11

Powerpoint used with able year 12 class, cover monosaccharides, disacchardies and polysaccharides.

Lesson to a mixed ability year 7 group, 100 minute session but could be adjusted. Market place activity, using differentiated booklets. AfL Dice game. Followed by more ethics based activities, looking at how doctors can make the decision of who receives a donor organ. Developing higher order thinking skills (Bloom's) by ranking and justifying ideas. Donor cards to be printed, and used as exit pass for 3-2-1 plenary.
