Animal Farm - Lesson 10 - Chapter 5 analysis

A lesson designed to encourage pupils to write a persuasive speech. Pupils watch a small clip of the TV programme 'The Voice', before trying to persuade one of the judges to pick them as a member of their team. Pupils investigate persuasive techniques using a power-point slide and card-sort. 1-9 grading criteria is given and a peer assessment sheet provided.

A very succinct activity starting with simple research tasks, culminating in an extended question. The focus is drawn back to Act 1 Scene 2, investigating to what extent does the discussion between Capulet and Paris in Act 1 Scene 2 conform to Elizabethan ideas of marriage?

A full lesson detailing to pupils how to identify the features of a leaflet (linguistic and format) and recreate these in a writing task, based on the Edexcel English Language exam. Suitable for SEN classes, KS3 classes and low ability KS4. A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson, with a clear presentation. The lesson contains a think, pair, share starter. The main activity consists of a pupil led analysis of two leaflets (designed to cover a small range of language and structural features) and finally the plenary consists of a peer assessment task (worksheet for this is attached). The entire lesson is very pupil-led, containing fast-paced, engaging tasks. Learning objectives. A05: LO1: Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, selecting and adapting tone, style and register for different forms, purposes and audiences. LO2: Organise information and ideas, using structural and grammatical features to support coherence and cohesion of texts. (Pupils friendly objective on PPT). Perfectly pitched for ASD pupils (I have so many who are obsessed with WWE!) with many visual prompts and small, manageable activities.

A lesson (via presentation) and scaffolded worksheet ( to support lower ability) which sets up a writing task where pupils introduce themselves and discuss their likes and dislike, hobbies and aspirations. I have used this as both a back up cover lesson and also an introductory lesson to my new classes.

A full lesson (recently observed as 'Outstanding') which depicts how to write a formal letter applying for a job. Based on the Edexcel's English Language (Paper 2) imaginative writing task. A fast-paced, pupil-led lesson with varied activities and integrated (graded) peer assessment. Worksheets are provided for differentiation of the task and a full lesson plan shows details of all activities (although the PPT is very straightforward anyway).

Suitable for all exam boards but designed for Edexcel English Language Specification (also attached) and grade boundaries from 3-6, which can be altered easily to accommodate HA or LA pupils. A full lesson outlining how to investigate the denotation and connotation of imagery and structure. The lesson involves a group starter task identifying the connotations of colours. They then complete a series of individual comprehension questions which aim to promote pupils' confidence and ability identifying the connotation or the writer's choice of words, before a peer assessment task.Pupils have GCSE 1-9 criteria to assess their work. There is also a homework task (or extension task) to encourage further development. A punchy, well paced lesson which gets pupils doing the work not you!

A recently observed Ofsted 'Outstanding' lesson. Objective (A03): Grade 3: Make obvious point of comparison. Make simple comments on writers’ ideas and view points. Level 4: As above and makes some specific references to theme, language and structure. Level 5: Discusses a range of comparisons in some detail. Explains the writers’ ideas and viewpoints with quotations to support. Pupils complete a series of activities to build a framework to asses both poems. They then complete an analysis framework sheet and a series of P.E.E paragraphs (with a support sheet for LA pupils).
