This section provides you with ideas and resources for activities in a variety of curriculum areas. It aims to give you a sprint start on which to build your Tour de France theme. This Tour de France pack has been developed by City of York Council, Sustrans, Biz-Ed Projects Ltd, and others with much of the curriculum content being developed by Sustrans Bike It officers in Yorkshire.

This resource contains further links to help enhance your Tour de France programme, together with other organisations that may provide more exciting resources. There is also a regional section, Wheels within Wheels Regional Activities, that provides information on a raft of local cycling activities in your area, together with British Cycling events. Five activities designed to be delivered over five days, showcasing some of the brilliant resources Sustrans has produced for teachers and young people. Ideal for making any week Walk, Scoot or Bike to School Week, they can be delivered to a wide range of ages by tailoring the level of detail and vocabulary used. The activities are selected to take your pupils on a journey, exploring the benefits of travelling by foot, bike or scooter, understanding how they can make a change and ultimately be inspired to take practical actions. The five activities can be run on consecutive days or spaced apart, but are designed to be delivered in order.

Resources form part of a classroom resource pack to meet Literacy and Numeracy Framework outcomes at Key Stage 3 through the topic of active travel. Sustrans' free pack of classroom materials can be delivered as a scheme of work or standalone lessons for Year 8 students. Provided are mathematical data sets, films, images and written articles to engage students. This resource is approved by the National Support Programme for Literacy and Numeracy in Wales. The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. Powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub, the 2017 challenge will run from 20 to 31 March and is open to individual classes as well as whole schools. On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. A school’s best five days will determine their final position, but they can log journeys on all ten days if they wish. For schools unable to take part in the main challenge we also have a one-day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities in the school day as well as on the journey to school. To celebrate the finale of the challenge there is also the option to join our superhero fundraising day. All schools will be entered into daily prize draws for rewards including bike and scooter stunt shows, equipment and storage if over 15% of your school cycle or scoot on each day of the challenge. Prize details will be announced on The Big Pedal website.

This is an exciting initiative allowing pupils to investigate the area around their school, before creating a manifesto on how to make their streets safer and greener. Pupils will use this to lobby decision-makers and elected representatives at national and local level to make their changes happen.

Suss It Out is a set of five themed worksheets, each with 10-, 20- and 30-minute simple, snappy activities to inspire action and discussion on active travel. These can easily be fitted into any part of a busy school day with no special resources or preparation necessary.
