Have oodles of fun designing your own theme park. This step-by-step Word guide explains how to create a marketing campaign for your very own theme park. The steps include: Create a name and a logo for your theme park. Design four new rides for your park and write a sentence to sell each of them. Create two areas to appeal small children. Create a new on-site hotel with themed rooms. Put it all together in a leaflet to publicise the theme park. This sixteen-page booklet contains example texts which have been marked-up to highlight key features.

Have fun exploring ideas about animal cruelty with Benjamin Zephaniah’s hilarious poem “Talking Turkeys”. This folder contains a cloze exercise on the poem to engage students directly with the text with follow-up comprehension questions. There are then three more powerpoint options for further exploration. Students can either create a leaflet to persuade people to give up turkey and eat something else at Christmas. Or if you are looking for a Christmas themed activity, students can use the poem as inspiration for their own Christmas poem. This powerpoint explains the difference between phrases and clauses and provides plenty of activities with answers to help students to create sentences. Intended as a precursor to multi-clause complex sentences, this will leave your students in no doubt about how to build complex and interesting sentences of their own.

Students find the spelling rule i before e tricky because there are several exceptions. This sixty slide powerpoint introduces the i before e rule and then students are given time to learn the spellings using a look/cover/spell/check sheet. The powerpoint then gives fifteen sentences with key words missing, which students have to spell correctly. There are a further ten clues to words with ie/ei in them. Finally an additional sheet contains 40 words with letters missing for students to consolidate the learning, either at home or in class. In 2016 over three hundred scientists wrote an open letter to argue that the United States should not leave the Paris climate change agreement, which was under threat by Donald Trump. Spelling words ending in y can be tricky. This powerpoint provides the rule and then practise with forty words ending in y. Presented as a quiz, students have to decide which is the correct spelling. This is then followed by a fourteen word exercise to add suffixes to words ending in y. All answers are provided and slides contain cartoon graphics to extend vocabulary and help second language learners. A worksheet is included to consolidate the learning in the lesson or at home. A simplified version of the quiz is thrown in free with differentiated worksheet also.

These spelling activities are divided into four rounds. In Round 1 students have to guess if the word ends in “tion” or “sion” from the pronunciation and the clue. In Round 2 students have to choose the correct spelling from a choice of two. In Round 3 students are introduced to the “cian” ending and have to guess the profession from the clue. Round 4 is twenty-two clues to words ending in either “tion”,“sion” or “cian”. Cartoon graphics add interest and help second language speakers. Glaciers are so important in the formation of landscape. This powerpoint explains how glaciers are formed and how they can create crevasses and moraines. It then zooms in on the case study of Hob Moor in York, which was formed by a glacier 15000 years ago. Students then have to create a storyboard of ten different stages to show the development of how the current moor was formed from an ancient glacier. Students will enjoy bringing geography to life and making it real.

This Powerpoint lesson was inspired by a letter to a newspaper agony aunt about a sister who made a racist joke at a family meal and the two sisters proceeded to fall out. The lesson goes through the letter and the agony aunt’s response, asking students to consider and compare what their responses would be. The message of the lesson is “label the joke, not the person”.

Many students write stories in which they jump between the present and the past tenses. This Powerpoint explains the difference between the simple past and the simple present tenses and contains a variety of exercises to encourage tense consistency and to help them to feel more confident. The zipped file also contains two informative and practical follow-up worksheets which ask students to put a passage about William the Conqueror into the past tense. The other worksheet asks them to put information about the Titanic into the past tense also.

Students are given a look/cover/spell/check sheet with 20 words with silent letters to spell. The powerpoint then gives each of the words with the letter missing and students write the correct spelling of the word. The answers are provided on the powerpoint and cartoon graphics are included to help second language speakers. A further worksheet supports a spot the silent letter activity in a passage about a ghastly day. Students then use the words which they have learnt to write a story using as many silent letters as possible.

Adding the suffixes -ful and -fully to the ends of words can be tricky because if the word ends in y, then you change the y to an i. This rule is explained and then there are twenty sentences that students have to complete with key words, either ending in -ful or -fully. Cartoon graphics are included to help second language speakers. All answers provided, so students mark their own work. A workheet is provided to consolidated the learning either at home or in class. A free suffix worksheet is thrown in for good measure too.

Full scheme of work with one lesson per chapter, totalling twenty-one chapters on Benjamin Zephaniah’s teen classic “Face”. Also included are narrative writing tasks; a literature essay on Martin’s character and a letter to Mr Zephaniah after reading the text. This full scheme of work would suit year 8 students and has lots of literacy activities on prefixes, suffixes, abbreviations, puns, complex sentences etc, all linked to the novel. There are also opportunities to explore in depth the key themes of friendship and bravery. Every class I have ever taught this novel to have absolutely loved it. This twenty-two slide powerpoint introduces the poet and her relationship with her husband; focuses on key language features; scaffolds students to write two PEE paragraphs on language and allows them to investigate the sonnet form. It concludes with them considering how love is presented in the poem in preparation for an exam-style question.
