Adding Fractions By Colouring

(1)
When just given numbers, adding fractions can be difficult for some students to comprehend. ‘Adding Fractions by Colouring’ is a resource where students shade in two fractions, add the segments together and then write down what fraction is shaded in the resultant fraction. It is ideal for KS2 and low ability KS3 students. This resource contains two worksheets… Worksheet 1 - Adding fractions with the same denominator Worksheet 2 - Adding fractions with different denominators (students take 1/2 to mean colour in 1 out of every 2 parts) This is an excellent resource for visual learners and for students to gain an understanding for why we add the numerators but keep the denominators the same.

Product and Sum worksheets are easily accessible, engaging, help improve problem solving skills and build resilience. In the Red section, students are given two whole numbers and have to add them to fill in the top answer and multiply them to fill in the bottom answer. In the Amber section, students are given just one middle number and either their sum or product meaning they will have to subtract or divide to find the missing number from the middle. In the Green section, students are given just the sum and the product and have to determine what the two numbers from the middle are. This is a nice way to lead onto factorising quadratics.
