I have taught secondary school science, Chemistry being my specialism, for 28 years. I have developed and used my resources in my own lessons, usually in response to a specific need or a gap in provision. I like resources that are multifaceted in the way they are used, if possible, so that they can be easily adapted to the needs of different classes, without necessarily having to alter them. I share my most frequently and successfully used here. I am now tutoring Chemistry online.

Acid rain vs Greenhouse Effect

(1)
The power point image sheet and the pollution boxes go together. This is a cut and stick activity to distinguish between acid rain and the greenhouse effect. The pollution 1 powerpoint is to show where the text boxes should go on the diagram , before they are stuck down.
Properties of groups.

Properties of groups.

(1)
The worksheets are to summarise the main properties and trends in properties of the elements in groups 1, 7 & 8. The text boxes activity sheets that go with them can be used for lower ability students as a cut and stick exercise, or a tick list to complete the worksheet.

(3)
Print the first slide out as a 9 page poster. Print the other slides onto card as a handout - 9 slides on each works. Students place the cards on the right place on the spider diagram. Under time pressure with active music and competatively is also good.

Carbonyls and acids reaction pathways

(2)
Print the first slide out over several sheets as a poster. Print the others as handouts - nine to a page - onto card, and cut out. Students learn the reactions by placing the carsd in the correct place on the poster.

Alkenes reaction pathways learning game

As a result of student feedback, this slighlty improved version of the previous powerpoint distinguishes the Markovnikov and Anit-Markovnikov products with HBr more clearly. As before, print the first slide over several pages to make a poster, print the rest as handouts onto card - 9 per page is a good size. the game is for students to place the cards in the correct place on the poster. Under pressure to music such as 'mission impossible' can help to shapren the instincts. Minor mistakes have been corrected.

The text is used with both levels of the worksheet. Both worksheets are gradated, but aimed at different abilty levels, the LAPS sheet for lower ability students.

Equilibria exam questions

(0)
Video tutorial showing how to tackle calculations on equilibria in A level Chemistry. The common mistake of students not using equilibrium concentrations is pointed out and a strategy to help with that problem. Make available to students to help with homework and revision.
Naming Ionic Compounds

Naming Ionic Compounds

(0)
Cut and stick activity. Match two labels to each chemical formula to name the compound represented by the formula. Students may experience a little conflict with some of the names but should be able to figure out the -ate and -ide rule from the examples given.
Energy level diagrams, bonds energies, enthalpy.

Energy level diagrams, bonds energies, enthalpy.

(0)
The powerpoint and the tutorial together move students from simple energy level diagrams through to quantitative calculations of enthalpy of a reaction using bond energies. Molymods are needed to follow throught the activity on the slides and a bunsen burner burning is intended to be the reaction they see and write the equation for at the beginning of the starter.

Worksheet with diagrams for students to describe and explain the brown gas diffusion experiment. Its worth printing this one out in colour - that usually goes down well.

Starter or plenary. Cut 'n&'stick. Text to sequence and diagram to label with the text. Presentation to check labelling (before final stick down.)
Hazards plenary and homework.
mmcfadyen21mmcfadyen21

Hazards plenary and homework.

Make a set of cards by printing the 'which hazard cards' onto card. The 'Which hazard?' makes a good plenary where the name and description of the hazards of the chemical are read out. Students hold up which label or labels should be put on each chemical. The homework sheet is to consolidate, and to make students aware that some everyday chemicals, for everyday uses, carry hazards and should be used with due care.
