A two-page worksheet to use after the presentation on William Golding. This is to introduce the novel Lord of the Flies and hopefully to motivate students to read the novel. There are three activities: a short writing activity and two speaking activities. There is a minimal amount of reading and so this can be projected and read out by the teacher. Suitable for high schoolers.

Novel study: Brooklyn by Colm Toibin Part 1 post-reading puzzle activity

This activity was drawn up to check the comprehension of part 1 of the novel Brooklyn by Irish author Colm Toibin. It can be done in groups. The teacher will have to print and cut out the thirty paragraphs, shuffle them and give them to each student or group of students. They will rearrange and number the paragraphs in the correct order. After correction (see how many groups get full marks) ask students to use their copy of the novel to find quotes for each paragraph and encourage them to make comments for analysis on dotted lines. Finish with a group discussion (activity 2). I have chosen this book for my literature class and this activity worked really well. More activities coming for parts 2, 3 and 4. Let me know if you want the correction pages. ;-)

Brooklyn Big Test Time

We have finished reading, studying and discussing the novel. It has been fun but now the time has come for a BIG test. Part one checks basic background knowledge, part two is about the story line and the characters and part three about the student’s response to the novel. Please tell me in the comments if you want more on Brooklyn, especially the activities on part 3 and 4. Hope your students enjoy the test! Mine loved it. No, just kidding. Anyway you can use it as a self-assessment task at the end of the unit of work.
