Singlish! Language and Identity: Language Variation

(0)
The Uplingo team loves variations of the English language, and in this resource we decided to develop a lesson to practice all 4 skills around the topic of Singaporean English (Singlish). This fits well into the theme of IBDP Language B: Language Variation (Identities) but it can also work with any EAL/ ESL class, to open your students eyes to different types of Englishes! The activity includes the following: Context setting group work activity where students divide into four teams to find out a different aspect of Singapore. They then present to the class. Pre-listening activity# 1 : Students work with a partner to translate given Singlish terms into standard English Active listening # 1: Students listen to a video to see if their Singlish translations were correct. Individual reading activity: Students go to a BBC article to answer questions on Singlish Active listening # 2: Students listen to an Open University video (Singlish Controversies) and listen for opinions/ attitudes towards Singlish. Debate: Students divide into 5 teams to debate a motion on banning Singlish Suggested writing tasks on Singlish This work has been developed independently from and is not endorsed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. IBDP Language B portfolio

Even though portfolios are not a course requirement for Language B, they are very useful to have for students to keep all of their work in one place. At the beginning of the document you can add links to any documents that you wish, and there is also a place for students to reflect and to add any vocabulary they learn. The teacher has flexibility to add anything to the portfolio, and the main plus is that all information is in one place. I get my students to complete their homework in this document, and also reflect on their progress. NOTE!!! Do not share this through Google Classroom. I tried this and GC kept duplicating the file, and I ended up with multiple portfolios per student. You need create a learner portfolio folder on your own Google Drive, and then manually make a copy of the portfolio for each student and share it with them individually. This resource contains introductory activities, prediction activities, questions, and some writing activities for An Astrologer’s Day by R.K. Narayan. This story is not included in the pack; however, it can be found on the Internet. This story can be read as part of the theme of Identities, and it ties in well if you are looking at contemporary issues such as scammers, people with fake identities, or people who disguise their true selves. This resource makes no overt reference to English B; however, there are questions which are similar to those found on Paper 2: reading. There are also critical thinking questions about how the writer uses language, and the effect created which will introduce students to skills they will need for the HL oral. Even though there is no literature component in SL, we at Uplingo believe that students of all language acquisition levels benefit from studying literature; therefore, if you have a stronger SL cohort then you can give this story a try.
