Why is safeguarding so important in schools?
Safeguarding is essential to any school setting. Proper safeguarding practices protect the school community, helping schools meet their legal and moral responsibility to keep students, staff and visitors safe and protected from harm.

Why is safeguarding important?
In 2025, there were 632,800 referrals to children’s social care in England. Similarly, NHS data reports that 1 in 5 children and young people has a probable mental health disorder.
Internet Matters found in their 2026 index report that children spend 23 hours a week online – and the internet has created new, complex safeguarding risks:

The Department for Education’s statutory guidance on Keeping children safe in education states that safeguarding in schools is “everyone’s responsibility” – that is, all teachers and members of staff are responsible for helping to keep students safe at school.
Ultimately, safeguarding in schools means implementing policies and procedures that help schools prevent harm to students both inside and outside of the school gates.
Supporting vulnerable and at-risk students
Another important aspect of safeguarding in schools is to support students who may be vulnerable or at risk.
This includes students who may have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), mental health issues, or who may have had adverse childhood experiences.
Schools have a duty to identify and support these students, and thorough safeguarding procedures helps ensure that they receive the appropriate support and can be signposted to the right services.
Protecting staff and visitors
In addition to protecting and supporting students, safeguarding in schools also helps to protect staff and visitors.
This includes ensuring that staff are safe from any kind of abuse, and that visitors are not a risk to the school community.
