Support for international schools
Teacher training and development
At Tes Institute, we believe that great schools are built on the shoulders of great teachers. Support your staff to grow through accredited professional development courses, including iPGCE, iQTS, Straight to Teaching and Assessment Only.
Whether you’re looking to support one teacher or build a broader development pathway across your school or school group, we can help you find the right route.
When teachers can move anywhere, you need a compelling reason for them to stay
International school leaders are balancing immediate staffing pressures with long-term school improvement goals.
With international schools competing to recruit experienced teachers around the world, it’s more important than ever to retain strong staff and create clear development pathways that support both individual progression and whole-school priorities.
Many schools are also looking for practical ways to:
- support teachers who need recognised qualifications while remaining in post
- develop early-career or unqualified teachers without taking them out of the classroom
- build consistent high-quality teaching practice across diverse teams and schools
- create a more sustainable pipeline of teaching talent within the school
- fit professional development around busy school life
Tes Institute can help. We partner with international schools to provide flexible professional development and accredited qualifications aligned to your goals.

Frequently asked questions from international schools
Tes Institute offers international qualifications and professional development programmes including iPGCE, iQTS, Straight to Teaching and Assessment Only.
Each route supports a different stage of teacher development. iPGCE is an academic qualification which develops advanced pedagogical knowledge, ideal for teachers looking for progression into middle or senior leadership. By itself, it does not lead to QTS (qualified teacher status). It can be combined with iQTS for your teachers who want to gain QTS.
Assessment Only, Straight to Teaching and iQTS all support progression towards QTS (qualified teacher status), but they’re best suited to different levels of experience. Assessment Only is for teachers who already meet the requirements for QTS but haven’t been formally assessed. Straight to Teaching is for less experienced teachers who don’t quite meet the requirements for QTS and would benefit from a structured teacher development programme tailored to them. iQTS is a full teacher training programme, equivalent to Initial Teacher Training in the UK, and doesn’t require any prior teaching experience.
We can help you identify the most suitable option for your staff.
That depends on your teachers’ experience, current role and professional goals. We can work with you to understand your school’s needs and recommend suitable pathways.
Tes Institute programmes are designed to fit around busy teaching timetables, helping teachers continue in post while they study. The exact requirements vary depending on the course.
Schools can identify suitable candidates, support and encourage staff throughout the course and ensure they have protected time to study as required.
For most of our courses, we also ask schools to appoint an in-school mentor who will provide one-to-one support and feedback to the learner – for example, by carrying out class observations.
Mentors are experienced teachers in the school who support learners through the course by helping the learner reflect on their teaching, linking their learning to classroom practice and providing guidance in your school setting. They work together with the Tes Institute pathway tutor to help learners stay on track and make the most of the course.
We provide a comprehensive induction for mentors, so they’ll know exactly what they need to do and the time commitment required.
