Course leader

Alison Lawton
After beginning my primary teaching career in the UK, I moved to Dubai, UAE, where I worked as a teacher and consultant for 10 years. While in Dubai, I completed an MA in Education. I began working for Tes Institute in 2018 as an iPGCE, AO and S2T pathway tutor and QTS assessor. I found it incredibly rewarding visiting teachers across the UAE and supporting educators internationally as they studied online.
On my return to the UK in 2021, I was appointed as SKE Deputy Director and enjoyed working with teachers as they enhanced their subject knowledge.
Now in the role of iPGCE Head of Programme, I enjoy supporting students located across the world as they strive to delve deeper into educational practice and theory, develop their criticality and become highly skilled and reflective practitioners. In all of the work that I do, I think back to my own teacher training and endeavour to provide a robust structure of support for students as well as nurturing them as they enhance their professional practice. Andrew's story
The reason I chose iPGCE from Tes Institute over other institutions was the flexibility of the part-time course so that I could balance family, work and study.

FAQs
An iPGCE, or International Postgraduate Certificate in Education, is designed for teachers working in international school settings. A PGCE is typically linked more closely to teacher training in the UK. While both are postgraduate qualifications in education, our iPGCE focuses on developing teaching practice in an international context and does not in itself lead to qualified teacher status (QTS).
An iPGCE is a recognised academic qualification around the world. It demonstrates strong pedagogical understanding in an international context, making it highly applicable to international schools in the UK and globally. If your goal is to teach in a UK state school, we recommend that you choose a course that leads to QTS (qualified teacher status), as this is the key requirement to teach in schools in England and Wales.
The iPGCE by itself does not lead to QTS and does not qualify someone to teach in UK state schools. If you're a non-UK teacher and your goal is QTS, then our iQTS course is an excellent choice for international teachers and you have the option to study the iPGCE alongside the iQTS programme. Alternatively, if you are teaching a British curriculum, Straight to Teaching and the Assessment Only route to QTS could work for you.
Recognition may vary depending on the employer, school or organisation, so it is always worth checking the specific requirements for the role you are interested in.
iPGCE stands for International Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
No, not by itself. If you want to achieve qualified teacher status (England and Wales), you'll need to take a different route.
For international teachers, we offer three potential routes to QTS:
- If you teach a British curriculum and you have at least two years’ experience in two schools, then you could be eligible to gain QTS via our Assessment Only route. This route is about demonstrating that you already meet the requirements for QTS.
- If you want to qualify via the Assessment Only route and you’re looking for focused, personalised and evidence informed support prior to assessment, or if you don't quite meet the Assessment Only requirements yet, Straight to Teaching is a teacher development course that prepares you for the Assessment Only route to QTS.
- If you’re looking for a full teacher training course, then iQTS is our route to QTS specifically designed for international contexts. You also have the option to study the iPGCE alongside iQTS.
An iPGCE is not the same as a full Master’s degree. Our iPGCE is a postgraduate qualification which offers 60 credits at Master’s level – that's equivalent to one third of a full Master’s degree. A full Master’s degree requires more study and a higher number of credits.
Yes, all applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. The required proof depends on your undergraduate degree and where it was studied.
- If you studied your undergraduate degree in an English-speaking country, your degree certificate and transcript are sufficient to demonstrate English proficiency.
- If your undergraduate degree is from a country where English is not the first language but your degree was taught and assessed in English, you can provide a letter or transcript from your university confirming this.
- If your undergraduate degree was not taught and assessed in English, you must provide an IELTS certificate with an overall score of 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any element.
Your in-school mentor supports you throughout the course by helping you reflect on your teaching, linking your learning to your classroom practice and providing guidance in your school setting. They work alongside your pathway tutor to help you stay on track and make the most of the course.
They’ll meet with you on a regular basis to discuss your teaching practice as well as carrying out lesson observations.
We provide a comprehensive induction for mentors, so they’ll know exactly what they need to do and the time commitment required. We estimate 15-25 hours across the school year.
Your mentor will carry out 6-12 lesson observations and 6-12 meetings with you during the course. We provide an observation form and a form for mentor meeting minutes. These can be completed actively during observations and meetings to reduce the time needed.
There will be a webinar for mentors during the induction period so they know what their role entails and the time that it will take. There will also be updates throughout the course.
