About The Petchey Academy

The Petchey Academy is committed to ensuring that every child will exceed national expectations whilst experiencing a wide and exciting range of opportunities, both within and outside of the classroom, to equip them with the skillset for their chosen path in higher education and with a genuine enjoyment of learning. As an inclusive academy the focus is on each child as an individual whilst fostering a sense of belonging to a rich and diverse community. The academy summarises this commitment in our motto: "Inspiring and supporting every child". This motto is then developed at sixth form to reflect a maturer student body and is summarised as: "Developing independent and accomplished learners".

We are committed to developing young people who can take their place competitively, in all walks of life, as rounded, mature and confident members of modern British society. We place great emphasis on giving our students the ability to consider and make choices in life, rather than following the crowd. Each student is expected to strive for the highest level of individual success in their chosen career path.We have high expectations of our students, instilling ambition not only for academic excellence (Excelsior: “ever higher”) but for success within all areas. We firmly believe in supporting and inspiring the individual to reach his/her own potential, at whatever level that may be. We create a positive learning environment, following Sir Jack Petchey’s motto “If I think I can…I can” where students are respectful and courteous.

What people say about us

Upon entering Petchey I was struck by the strong concept of community that permeated throughout the academy. Students and teachers alike seemed to recognise the significance of the Petchey logo and that there was a very unique ethos and belief in the school. I was immediately welcomed in to my department and learning centre. Even though I felt like a burden as an unqualified Teach First teacher, my colleagues helped me along, encouraged me constantly and were always there to offer support, to congratulate me and to offer guidance. This is something that continues to this day.

Dear Ms Cole, It's not often that I make the effort to contact a school in relation to the behaviour of their respective students, but I felt my experience warrants a short e-mail. I was walking down Down's Road to collect my car from Volvo and passed four young students in the Petchey Academy uniform waiting at the bus stop. I was pleasantly surprised by their behaviour. They were all very smartly dressed, waiting patiently for the bus, and as I approached them they immediately parted so I could pass. One of the students was even reading a book! I am continually frustrated by the poor behaviour of school students in East London. Your students are refreshingly different.
