This resource includes two creative writing tasks centered on the theme of place. Each task offers a narrative prompt and TWO questions - one requirung them to create their own imaginative piece inspired by the thematic focus and literary techniques evident within the prompt provided, and one requiring them to analytically explain their creative choices in crafting their imaginative piece. This task encourages students to demonstrate their understanding of concepts of connection and belonging to a particular location through the application of varied literary devices utilised in the mentor texts provided by the prompts. This can serve as a guided class activity or as an assessment task. There are two separate activities so that teachers who want to use this as an assessed task can also have an in-build practice test included. I have successfully used this over the course of 3-4 lessons, splitting the task up to use the first task as a guided reading and planning activity over the course of at least two lessons, and then using the second question as a practice timed test. This resource provides a series of in-class essay tasks designed for high school English (literature) students studying Wilfred Owen’s poetry. Each essay response question focuses on different aspects of Owen’s work, prompting students to explore things such as: human suffering the enduring relevance of texts the function of poetry as social or political critique poetry as a vehicle by which composers prompt critical reflection on dominant assumptions exploration of human nature innocence and vulnerability … and more. These essay tasks are structured to allow you to easily assess student understanding of how context shapes meaning and how composers actively use language forms and features and the structure of their texts to craft meaning.

This bundle provides 15 fully formatted essay questions which can be used as study questions, practice tests or assessment tasks. They support assessment of student understanding based on units of work which focus on a critical study of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Each question is designed to assess students’ understanding of the novel through various analytical lenses, and encourage students to engage with the text and its context, demonstrating their ability to analyse and interpret Shelley’s work with detailed textual evidence. This is designed for use after a class analysis and study of the poem ‘The Next War.’ It is a mini skills workshop using an excerpt of the poem as a mentor text for teaching and practising writing personification. Students examine the text, identify the personification and then try to create their own examples. I have my students read their work out to the class at the end and find ways of rewarding the work. This is an editable document so that you can add or adjust things as needed to suit your class. You could use the same excerpt for workshopping tone, ambiguity and more.

Students can benefit from using the set texts for analytical study as models for what to do in their own creative writing. This task encourages students to actively consider the value of sensory imagery and allows students to build their skills in applying sensory detail in a narrative setting. Because they are already confident with the context and mood of Wilfred Owen’s ‘Dulce et Decorum est,’ they are often more confident in trying their hand at creative writing, as the setting, context and mood are already decided upon, reducing the number of creative decisions they need to make. This task works best after an analytical study of the poem or a series of poems by Wilfred Owen. This will easily cover one class period and could be spread over two lessons if preferred.
