A lesson plan, PowerPoint and differentiated worksheet which teaches the formal method for column addition and subtraction up to 4 digits. Initially used with a Year 4 class but could be adapted and used with Year 3. Pack includes: Adaptable Lesson PowerPoint - Calculations can be easily changed by changing the digits and adding (simply copy and paste) or deleting the place value counters. PowerPoint is designed so that teachers can model the methods and children can practise, before moving onto the activity. Differentiated Worksheet (HA, MA & LA questions) - ignore blank page. I couldn’t get rid of it. Answer sheet Place Value Grid - for pupils to use if they need visual representation (I laminated these so pupils had the choice of using actual place value counters or just drawing the counters with whiteboard pens then rubbing them out).
