International Women's Day Assembly - Women's History Month

(7)
This resource includes an assembly plan and 19 slide PowerPoint to use for Women's History Month or International Women's Day on 8th March. No further preparation needed. The assembly is suitable to use with KS2 or secondary aged children. The slideshow provides the opportunity to discuss why we might focus on women's history, before moving on to give details on how women's circumstances changed from ancient times to today. There are 10 slides which outline key achievements of 10 different women, from Marie Curie to J K Rowling. The plan (pdf) gives details about how to use the slideshow. I like to lead assemblies that are interactive and relevant to the children's lives, so the plan gives plenty of opportunity for children to discuss ideas, give feedback and reflect. The PowerPoint and plan are in the zip file. The PowerPoint is not editable. Please click 'Read Only' to open. Some of the images are only revealed when the PowerPoint is played as a slideshow with the animations. Updated in February 2024.

Holocaust Memorial Day Assembly

This assembly resource has been created with KS3 and KS4 secondary students in mind to be delivered on Holocaust Memorial Day (27th January). This resource has been created on Microsoft Powerpoint Teacher Notes have been added to the notes section underneath each relevant slide on the Powerpoint to support with the delivery of the content. I am a history teacher and the content of this assembly resource is an extension of a type of activity that I would deliver to my history students when teaching the holocaust. This assembly resource offers a brief exploration using skills of inference of a historical artefact and relies upon student contributions through teacher questionning. A link to a Youtube video has been provided as part of this resource (please ensure you have access to youtube prior to use) This resource also makes reference to the 2024 Holocaust Memorial Day theme of ‘Fragility of Freedom’. The utmost care has been taken to ensure this resource has been created with the utmost respect to the victims of the holocaust and to ensure that students have the opportunity to connect and empathise to the human beings to whom the attrocities of the holocaust were committed. There a no images or corpses in this resource - however the murder of victims is discussed. I really hope you enjoy delivering this assembly and that your students find it engaging and valuable. If you are able to leave a review once you have taught it, I would be really grateful. Teaching Holocaust in history? Check out lessons from my scheme of work! D-Day Landings

(0)
World War II The aim of this lesson is to explore how and why the D-Day landings were a success. Students are given the details about the Atlantic Wall and learn how Hitler’s attempts to design and build it ultimately led to its flaws and weakness in repelling the Allied forces in June 1944. Furthermore, students have to decide which landing site would be more advantageous to the Allies, the port of Calais or the beaches of Normandy. They also analyse the various ingenious inventions of the Allies from the Mulberry Harbours to the underwater PLUTO pipeline. There are some excellent visual sources to accompany the lesson and well as video footage from the BBC. The resource includes retrieval practice activities, suggested teaching strategies and differentiated materials, and comes in Powerpoint format if there is a wish to adapt and change. The lesson is enquiry based with a key question using a lightbulb posed at the start of the lesson and revisited throughout to show the progress of learning.
