Comprehension questions and answers to the book ‘Grace the Pirate’ by author James Riordan. Comprehension questions and answers to chapters 1-3, chapter 4, chapters 5-6 and chapter 7.
A lesson which encourages children to use reasoning and examine a range of sources carefully to investigate the question:
LIFE ON A PIRATE SHIP WAS FULL OF EXCITEMENT AND ADVENTURE. DO YOU AGREE?
Children will have access to a range of sources including the pirate code of conduct (3 versions, differentiated), information about common diseases, pictures depicting life as a pirate etc. There are also some other suggestions in the plan of things you could add (such as hard tack biscuits - v easy to make and disgusting to eat!!)
Children are challenged to examine the sources carefully to decide whether or not they agree with the statement and decide whether life in a pirate ship would be a barrel of laughs...or not!
A plan for Y2 and top end of Y1.
This is a 3 week Fiction unit of work based on T4W using a skills ladder and modelled text. If you don’t know this story, it is a really good one!
There are resources included to help with the teaching and delivery of this unit of work. I have also included flipcharts with various screens to save you time!
I also have a Non-Fiction unit of work available on my TES shop so check out my other resources.
This unit is perfect for summer term, especially when gathering evidence for possible moderation. You will see in the plan how I have targeted certain children as a focus in certain lessons (XXXX).
An easy-to-use PowerPoint of the Pirate Game for use in maths lessons. Step-by-step explanation and brief example. Blank grid to print for students on the last page.
A fantastic resource to introduce carroll diagrams to children using pirates. Children will have different criteria to sort the pirates into (starting with just 2 different criteria and then 4) and extending them by creating their own. A fab activity that will keep them really engaged.

The resource includes my Pirate Game sheet (pdf), a fully editable ppt file with the Pirate Game sheet so you can adapt it to include your own symbols/rules. The Grid to display on the IWB and I have also updated and provided a guide as to how to play the game for anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure as of yet.
